1985 mazda rx7 GSL

undefinedhey there you guys...well i am new here and i wanted :) to ask you guys for a favor...is it worth buying a GSL with rear disc brakes for $1000, is it a must grab or is it too high???plus i test drove it and it runs pretty good with 160,xxx mile on it...thanks -ko vang ;)

well check for rust, the most common spot is behind the bins, it takes about 2 minutes to check, you take a phillips screwdriver and remove the screws and remove the bin and look. If the engine runs strong and idles and 700-800 rpms, revs freely and everything looks mechanically in spec why not? And oh yes the most important thing is not being scared of the rotary engine, it can be intimidating at first but after reading this thread alot you can build up your confidence and actually know what your doing. The best part is you don't even need to take it to local mechanics because they know nothing about rotarys you can do it all yourself that is if you want to...

If you like to do your own work (or wish you were doing your own work instead of paying someone more than you make to do it) you can't go wrong with the 84-85 GSLs. Dan Young (above) has good advice about the rust, if that isn't there (probably not in a California car) and the thing runs and looks OK, it's a good deal at $1000. I'm a non-mechanic, but I just put a clutch in my 84 GSL this week, pilot bearing and all. What a nice feeling to have that 21 year old car running like new. See my web page for some of the repairs you might be doing to keep your old classic running well:

I bought my 85 GSL for $1025 with 119k miles, 3 years ago, in California. Practically rust free and engine was running strong. Had just passed smog, had working A/C, and all the other GSL extras. so I think 1k bucks is a good price.

well, I bought my 85 GSL a few weeks ago for $150. It has a Dellorto 48DHLA, RB header and exhaust, and some cool lookin mesh wheels. Downside is there's some dents and it doesn't run. You be the judge

if you look around and be patient, you can find a much better price. but that isn't bad to be honest.

i havent bought the dam thing yet cause my dads friends still using it but now hes offered me 700 bucks for it and im really thinking about it....its looks pretty clean and it drives strong too but the problem is that when you brake on the car, you cant just brake slowly with the pedals...you press pretty deep than it automatically jerks you into a hard brake...thats what i need to fix if i buy it...thanks for the replys its been long sinceive been on...-ko

if the car is in great running order, i'd say go for it, my neighbor is selling his for $1,950 and it's in near perfect, except for a 2 dents.

Yo baught mine for $800 ran great no rust, idled fine, it was practicaly perfect, but ithink sum1 ran it through a ditch... or two cuz the undercarriage is a little bumpy... :bigthumb: the guy wanted 1g obo ;)

Rusty Shackleford 06-28-05 12:17 AM

my brakes do it that too.......but it makes you swerve to the right really hard....i almost side swiped a car on the interstate when the traffic suddenly stoped and i was about to rear end somebody plus get rearended myself but i turned off into the grass instead, which was good because the girl behind me came about an inch frmo hitting the car that was infront of me so if i were betwen them and stayed...well yea commen sense tells ya there..!!
since then i know about it and i brake earlier.....but i still havnt done a brake job or bleed it which would probly fix the problem.
