1985 GS to FC brake conversion questions

Hi, so I am rebuilding an -85 GS from the ground up. when I picked it up nothing was opperational. My first goal was to redo the brakes since stopping is mare important than goig. so anyway, I found out Respeed has a Five lug axle that will fit he 85 drum brake axle. Thay also have an addaptor that will allow the use of the FC disc components. My question is. Has anyone installed this and do the have any insight they could share. tried searhing the archives but couldn't find any how-to's. I know I will need the callipers, rotors, pads, and misc. hardware from the FC.
  • Do the FC front rotors need a seperate bearing?
  • Can I still use the front spindles?
  • Is the FC mastercylinder compatible with the FB brake booster, or do I need the FC unit?
  • Is the FC brake lines a different Diamater?( I am going to replace these anyway due to rust)
  • Will the kit work With the four piston front calipers?
If anyone has any answers I really appreciate the help. I just want to buy once rather than do the drums then convert later.:)

Thanks

FC rotors don't have the bearings installed... they are on the FC hubs.
I believe your front spindle is the correct large diameter needed for the conversion.
You can use your stock MC and brake booster BUT it will brake better with the FC items.
Get the SS lines from RE-Speed when you get the kit.
It only works with the 4 piston TII calipers.

Best thing is to contact Billy from RE-Speed. He will answer all your ?...

You can always ask questions over at Billy's forum too, if you want a little personal attention. Billy is really good about helping out with questions and installation.

Thanks A ton! you guys rock. Can I still compete by scca guidelines with the conversion? as street modified class maybe?

If they are still RX-7 brakes, why say anything? ;)

The FC brake master only mates to the FC booster. This can be installed, but the firewall mounting holes for both the clutch and brake masters need to elongated sideways since the FC booster is much wider. It only needs a spread increase of about 3/8". Take an equal amount from both sides since this mod will skew the alignment of pushrod coming from the pedals and has the possibility of premature wear to the bores of the masters. I used a small carbide bur to widen mine. Be sure to use the FC brake proprtioning valve too.

You will need to replace the flex brake lines to the calipers since the FC uses banjo fittings on the calipers instead of flare fittings like the 1st gens. Billy has SS brake lines, definitely get those.

Thanks I was wondering about the porportioning valve. Will the respeed SS flex lines mate with the hardlines from the chassis or do I need a different thread on those ends? (I am going to replace them anyway as they are rusted through in spots)

Thanks

Yes, the FC flex lines will mate to the chassis lines, those are still double flare fittings. The only years where one runs into trouble is with the SA, (79-80), since those flare fittings are coarse thread, all the later ones have fine thread flare fittings.
