1983 RX-7 GSL starting issue
 

Hello, my 83 rx-7 stopped starting randomly.

I rebuilt the carb and it started right up and I shut off the car before it got warm because it was smoking from the carb and exhaust and i got nervous because its my first rx-7.

Then I started to start it and it didn't work. just cranked..


so far:
I deflooded the engine 2 times and nothing and added oil into 2 small barrel in carb
new spark plugs
new cap and rotor

I even put a jump starter on the battery and cranked but it didnt work..

could it be the fuel pump? coils? what could it be..

Like any engine, the rotary needs the three main components for running: spark, fuel, and compression.

Are you sure you have spark? Are the plugs wet with fuel when you pull them out? Since it started already, I'd say you have all of these things, but maybe not exactly how they should be

Since you said you rebuilt the carb, are you sure you put all of the vacuum hoses back where they needed to be?

Yes vacuum line was where it was supposed to be and i started it before and i shut it off before it warmed and now it doesn't start..


Not sure how to check for spark.

only one of wet but i deflooded it for 20 seconds and it still is the same.

Double-check that the spark plug wires are going to the right coils from the distributor and from the distributor to the spark plugs in the engine

I engaged on your facebook thread, you really are having a helluva time with this. We've all been here. At this point having a method can help troubleshooting. Which is easier said than done for myself as I naturally panic and just start pulling stuff. some great advise has been given. Some follow up thoughts. are your floats stuck and flooding your engine? I'm certain I had this happen to me . If the fuel pump was energized fuel just ran down the carb before I even tried starting the car. I remove the spark plugs when unflooding. (be sure to disconnect the wires from the coil to disable spark) As you crank to deflood you can see fuel atomize into the atmosphere until it dissipates. After that a capful of motor oil down the primaries can lubricate the internals and briefly help with compression.

I have to ask, did you change the timing when you replaced the cap and rotor? What cap and rotor did you get? For instance, I believe the 79-80 set is different from the 81-85.

Not sure if float is stuck to be honest.
I did all that for deflooding but nothing.

No i didn't change the timing.
I just got cap and rotor from rock auto but i tried both cap and rotors OEM and aftermarket (new) aand it still doesn't start.

I just removed the rotor and the silver cap covering the dizzy was a bit loose and i put it back on normally.
