1980 12a idle problems
my 1980 12A stock is not wanting to idle it will rev high but idle past 1500 RPM.
I'm getting the carb rebuilt hoping that will fix the problem. will that fix it the issue or did i just waste money? also people keep telling to do a emissions delete but i can't find a guide to do it for. Is there a guide on here to do it. |
One common mistake the new owners make jump immediately to the carb as the source of running poorly issues. It's best to correctly diagnose the issue rather then fire the parts cannon. The second thing they do is think that removing the rats nest will also solve issues OR improve performance. For a street car that isn't making more than 85 hp rear wheel, removing the rats nest doesn't help.
It works out better if you diagnose the real issue first. You would not believe how many first timers buy an RX-7 then do all these things and get frustrated they didn't work. |
May be a vacuum leak on one of the too-many hoses on the carb/emissions. One test is to use some brake cleaner (My rotors-guru recommends Barrymans B12) and spray the carb area with the engine running. The theory being that such action may momentarily bring the idle down if in fact the problem is a leaky hose, when the cleaner plugs the leak for a moment. This would at least tell you where to start looking.
Some background here may help: - how long has this been going on. -Was the car in longe storage and this is a Resurrection? Bad/dead gas in the carb may be the problem. Maybe worth running a can of SEAFOAM thru the tank (and thus the fuel system). If someone can manage the gas pedal, it may help to spray it directly into the carb mouth with the engine running. yeah. Lots of talk here about faulty/incorrect rebuilds on Nikkis that can create more probs than solved. Worth an archive dig to read some of the pro-guys comments and tips.
