1979 Mazda RX-7 Carb

Hey guys this might already be on the forums but I am not sure which one i need to look at. The thing is I have a factory carb on my rx-7 and it will not idle. If I keep my foot on the gas it will run like a camp but once I let off of the gas after a couple of seconds it will die. I was thinking about rebuilding the carb and going from there but I have no clue what rebuild kit I should get. Can anyone tell me what the stock carb on the rx-7 is and what rebuild kit I should get? Also if you have any suggestions what the problem might be please let me know.

Thanks,

Matt

Have you tried adjusting the idle speed?

If so then you may just have a clogged idle circuit which may not require a rebuild, just a partial disassembly to clean the idle passage.

If you become convinced a rebuild is needed then research will be needed.
I did a quick search in the 1st gen archive and found this list of threads that may be helpful.

FYI....The search button is your friend, and if you dont use it people will be mean to you.

Thanks for the reply and info on the carb. Unfortunately, it did not bring up the list that you were talking about. It asked me to try different terms to use for the search. Also I did use the search button but it brought up a lot of different information on nikki, holly and other carbs. Maybe I was not searching right and for that I apologize, but I figured I could always ask since I was not 100% confident in what I found was the right thing I needed. Not to worried about mean people (use to it from the line of work I am in) more interested in the nice people (like you) that take the time to answer my stupid questions lol. But again thanks for the information it will give me a starting point.

Im not sure what happened to the link, it worked when I first posted. FYI your carb is a nikki. There is tons of info on how to rebuilds, kits etc.

Go to search, advanced search and search for "carb rebuild" and tell it to look in the first gen archive.

I will try to post another link and see if it works.

Oh well, I give up on the link, but you can search it out and find what you need.

Search by thread title helps too.

I'll say this because no one else has. There are three idle adjustment screws on a 79 carb. Two in the middle and one on the side. The two in the middle are the air screw (big) and the fuel or mixture screw (small). The screw on the right side is the throttle stop and is held in position with a nut. The nut is like 7mm and hard to get to.

You will have to adjust these screws to get your idle to come up a bit. Due to colder weather, that may be the cause and adjusting the screws a tiny bit may be all you need to do.

Sound like an odle circuit is clogged for sure. Try running some seafoam in the tank to see if it cleans it out.

Its really easier to just pull it and rebuild IMHO.

You want the HYGRADE kit, it seems to be the best.
