1979 Interior Trim fix

I was reading some tips in a hot rod forum about interior fixes and came across the Silver leafing Pen:nod: . This is my first run with it and I will probably re do it but I remain really optimistic. Looks tons better and seems to dry solid. Here are some pics.

Wow, looks very good. Did you have to clean the old flaking off before you began? Can you zoom in tigher so we can see the final results more closely?

I did not...But should have. I just slapped it over uneven surfaces.I will be taking it back down and redoing it.

Here is one I redid today..Looks alot better, not perfect, but better. I took off all of the chrome down to the black plastic and reapplied. There does seem to be a learning curve on getting the leafing to lay down smoothly..But Hey for 10 bucks I am pretty happy.

not bad for 10 bucks.

would be alright if you could put a clear coat over it to give It a nice shine.

I used chrome door trim from the auto parts store to restore my 80. The stuff you put on the outside edge of the door so it doesn't scuff if you open the door into something.

Haven't really got to mess with it much last couple of days. I would probably use the chrome strips if I could find it thin enough for the double stripe...But I think i can get this looking good..might just take a few tries and ample clear:nod: Sandy Re.

The problem I've found is in the thickness. The original stuff is more like a foil which delaminates and peels off over time. I've went to a sign shop and had them cut 36inch long strips out of chrome stripe material. You can do this in what ever width you want. Unfortunately, its a little thicker than the foil and doesn't conform well to curves and arcs. Even after applying with a heat gun to make it more pliable and tacky, it tends to straighten back out and lift after cooling.

What was originally used is chrome tape. It is thin and has an adhesive backing. The real stuff is hard to get hold of but a user "gypsy" on AusRotary.com explained the process. This guy did the same thing but the product he got wouldn't adhere. He ended up getting it redond in chrome vinyl wrap. See this youtube vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiSiBnETnoU

Lot of good info..great video KYPREO. I'll put up some more pics whenever I finally get finished.

No problem. The chrome film is coming off my 85 door trims and I will be using the aviation aluminium tape that gypsy refers to in the post I linked from AusRotary.com.
