1979 idle speed?
 

what is a 79 rx7 suppose to idle at? rpms i mean. right now its idling at 2500...

I thought it was supposed to idle at under a grand... I wanna say 850, but Im not positive (my 82 idles at 1500 :eek: )

I think it's supposed to be 850. But anywhere between 700 and 1000 is good.

750-850 is good. The tach isn't the best, so that window could even be bigger. But if you can't get it to idle less than 900, there's a vacuum leak somewhere.

Someon's gonna have to do a write up on the old vacuum leak deally.

Mine runs at 800 rpm + or - a few. If you did a rebuild, theres a screw you'll need to adjust that pushes the primary shutters open a bit, its covered in a white nylon saftey nut so as not to open it to much. Back it out a little a time to see if it makes a difference, that or your throttle cables might be sticking or even the hot start assist i believe. Its VERY simple as theres few parts on the 79 conpared to the later years.

I strongly advise against this!
First of all, that screw is for the secondary throttle shaft.
If that is altered in order to compensate for a real problem, then you add another variable to the mix, and you may NEVER get the carb to idle correctly until you take it off and rebuild it.

I know what I'm talking about. Trust me when I say that you do not want to get into that!

There is an idle adjustment screw. Mabey this is just screwed all the way in. Would that be enough to make the car idle at 2500? I don't know. Just a suggestion.

well yes i just recently rebuilt the carb. i actually only got it to run last weekend, it hasnt been cranked in seven years. but when i took the two screws out when rebuiling it, it took 4 and a half turns to get the top screw out and something like 10 or 11 to get the bottom one out. should they be futher in or out or what?

There should be two adjustment screws. One is the idle mixture adjustment screw. It is right at the bottom of the carb on the drivers side. It has a spring on the screw (don't know why). The other adjustment screw is for idle speed. It works quite simply. It just holds the primaries open a certain amount. It is located on the same side of the carb but right near the throttle linkages. It also has a spring i believe (still don't know why).

Ok, I just looked at my haynes and it seems the 79's are different then the 82 carbs. There are two screws still, just one above the other. On the drivers side of the car, in the bottom of the carb there is the upper screw (the idle mixure), and the lower screw (idle speed). You should adjust the lower screw untill an idle speed of around 750 is reached. Also remember that the car has to be at operating temperature for this.
