13bt into a first gen

hey everyone,

Just quickly, what does it take to fit a 13bt from a cosmo into first generation rx7. I'm presuming it would be relitavly easy because the 12a and 13b blocks being a similar size and shape.

Thanks for your imput :icon_tup:

Totally depends on how you decide to run the engine, and what turbo(s) you decide on.It could be difficult or it could be pretty simple.

That decision will determine the mounting method and the oilpan situation. The oilpan, steering clearance, motormount style, crossmember and ECU/turbo choice are all dependant on each other when running an 89-up engine. That includes,

S5 FC(N/A and TII)
FD 13B REW
Cosmo 13B
Cosmo 20B
Renesis 13B......maybe,who knows yet?!

I don't know what makes the Cosmo engine different from other 13bt engines (like those from the TII and FD) but I know there's a ton of TII-into-12a chassis information to be had in the archive and searching this section. Isn't exactly what you're looking for, but previous posters have already pointed you towards two of the 13bt guys on here. IIRC Directfreak's engine is Cosmo, so I'd PM him first. It's no longer stock, but if his memory is good he could probably give you a few pointers. Revhed is definitely a wealth of 13bt knowledge as well, and just posted a few days ago showing off his beast.

Good luck though :)

Oh and how could I "quickly" describe what it takes to do the swap?
Money, time and patience.

Guys the way I am doing it is 12A for a 13BT from a turboII model, I used the front cover from the 12A to mount the engine and a oil pan from a 13b from 1985 model. The front cover will fit pretty easily only with a few modifications like drilling a hole on the side for the return of the oil from the turbine..And the front engine mount needs to be cut so it will fit, I am also using a turboII tranny. I will post pics when its finished. :)

DirectFreak told me he used a 13B REW out of a Cosmo since they're 'luxury' cars in Japan and therefore not bagged to hell and back like used ones out of an FD. If I'm misremembering any part of that I'm sure he'll correct me :)

The Cosmos was a luxury automatic. The intake porting is different for more low end torque and if iirc, the exhaust ports are different. I remember seeing a pic and they were not centered in the housings like all of the other rotarys, they had a slight offset..

I bought a "Bolt in kit" so I've had to do nothing special to put it in.
However I did do months if not years of research into it and can say most everything you need to know, about 99% of it is in these posts on here. just spend a couple days reading everthing and it will become quite clear. :)
