13BT ('90) into GenOne '85

Sorry I know this has been addressed but I'm new to the forum and to RX7s in general. I have a '85 GS and I'm thinking of swapping in a JDM 13B 2nd Gen Turbo Engine. Idea of a lighter GenOne with 200hp motor seems like a good one particularly since I need a new motor anyway.

I would like feedback on doing as straightforward a swap as possible. I would rather NOT swap front covers and such as I've seen mentioned in a few threads.

I hope to get an engine/transmission combo with a complete harness and need to keep it smog reg compliant -- Must pass smog inspection in Albuquerque these days. I'm looking to keep the engine/electronic package as stock as poosible to begin with with possible performance mods later as I upgrade the total package.

Any help/info to help me on my way will be greatly appreciated.

you'll more than find adequate information on a complete swap...theres absolutely nothing wrong with swapping front covers and is a very possible option...if I can recall correctly you will also need an oil pan of a 12a as well as a different rad to make it all fit...but hopefully luiml or steeve84t2 will chime in...do a search first and then ask some more questions...its all there you just got to be relentless and look for it

Swapping the oil pan for a GSL-SE item (12A won't work) and the front cover IS the most straight-forward way of doing it. Otherwise you will need to fabricate a new crossmember. The only issue that creates is the OMP but there are ways around that.

someone thats just tired of seeing people post the same thing told me once.. search and then so some research..

^ thats what i am doing now

Swapping the front covers is by far the easiest way for installing a TII motor into your FB. Keep reading and all the information will show up. If you have anyspecific questions PM people that have done the swap and are willing to help. No need to have another "will this work" type thread.

You should Lee, that's the second time I've seen you post that. :rlaugh:

13B SE oil pan, front cover and engine mount. Front cover will need to be modified for the S5 mop, thanks to our pioneer 84Steve.

Not changing the FC'sfront cover will require you to adress a lot more issues than if you do just swap on an SE cover.

The motor mounts will have to be custom
The crossmember will have to be custom
The steering will have to be custom

This is all because the FC oilpan will not clear the 1st gen's X-member and rear steering linkage. And,the SE oilpan will not bolt to an FC front cover.....thus,the quick, easy way to make it fit, is to bolt on an SE front cover and SE oilpan. It will all fit right and there is no special issues when changing the cover.Just keep the Eshaft's thrust "stack" compressed while the big center bolt is off, change the cover, and bolt it all back up.

Then decide how you want to adress the S5 electronic OMP issue.Either premix and tie off the OMP,or mod the SE cover to accept the OMP in the factory setup. The later is a better way to go when retaining the stock ECU and smog gear.

And get an FSM for the year engine you buy.Its a lifesave for wiring and emmisions setup...I consider it mandetory reading for a TII swap, youll be glad you got it,trust me.

In regards to the engine mount, you either have to modify the orginal by slotting the mounting holes or hammering it flat or you can buy the RB 12A to 13B mount. You can't just use an SE bracket as they are the same as the 12A.

really...the second time?...what the hell is with my fingers...my mind says one thing and they type another...its just common sense that a 12a oil pan wouldn't mount direct mount to the 13b...
