12aT project need help! Turbo water lines?

Im boosting my 12a and i got all my oil lines and im ready to tap the front cover. Im also in the process of boost preping my dhla 48. But i have know idea :Wconfused what to do with the water lines on the turbo. Its a ht18s-2s. I read that you can run it without them hooked up but is that ok. I think FbII uses the same turbo and dosent have them hooked up. And i do have a decently sized fmic and im also gonna get a 2nd gen fmoc after i get it going but i still have the beehive as of now.

Jeezus 02-10-09 08:54 PM

Yes, use them. Just run it with the line that goes from the radiator to the heater core. This will supply cooled coolant to the turbo, then to the heater core.

Nice IC setup and piping. May I ask where you bought it from?

Siraniko 02-10-09 10:20 PM

upgrade your OC to the one below or in front of the radiator. that will give you more room on top of your engine bay and at the same time, if you must, use the heater core in/out. just an idea but you get my point.

i ran mine without the water and had no problems.most turbo rebuild places i had been to said it only cools the turbo a couple degrees, and said its fine to run without the water.

Been driving mine around. I had the dump pipe made on Monday, but it has problems with the wastegate rod being too long, so the wastegate is always partially open, AND as a result doesn't make any boost in low gears. But hey 4psi through 2nd 3rd really seems to help, I can't imagine what its gonna be like once it can build 8-12psi in first gear....

thanks its actualy an ebay kit. and i do plan on using a fmoc off a second gen once i get it going. but i actualy ended up pulling out the motor with my cuzin it was heavier then we thought it would be but i am only 17 an weigh like a buck 45 an my cousin aint much bigger so it wasnt the easist thing to do with out the right tools.

racerlinkfc 02-19-09 02:46 PM

you dont need the water lines hooked up.

rx7learner 02-20-09 01:23 PM

Havent had the water lines going over a year in Tampa heat on my DD with no problems.

since i took out the motor i decided to take parts off and clean them up to make it all look nice, so here's a few pics of whats been done and some old engine bay pics from when i first got her till now that the motor is out.

CHiNO84gsl 03-01-09 02:34 PM

Since the motor is out off the car ive taken a few parts off to clean them and the motor up a bit. The carb and upper intake mani was the first things to come off because i need to boost prep the carb so i cleaned them up.

I had to take off the lower mani so it can be as clean as the upper and not stand out for beins so dirty, and when i did i noticed what seams to be coolant passages on the side of the block near the intake ports that were blocked off with QUARTERS!!!! And some type of red silicone sealent. But 50 cent was in my motor literaly a quarter in each passage. Is this ok? what do you guys who run similar setups do to block off these holes? should i put them back when the time comes or use somthing else and if so what?

Also the motor in my belief was preiviously removed because there was a bolt that connects the block to the tranny that was missing and seeing ass the po did most of the work like instaling the dhla 48, rb intake ,headers, msd balster coils ac delco wires and ngk plugs, 2 holey blue fuel pumps, adjustable fpr, and a few other bits n pieces so i was wondering if it was ported. How would i be able to tell becuase i can hardly see the intake ports, and my fingers arent able to fit in the slots well enough to feel around in there.

hey was 12a the stock one that came with the car? are doing a draw thru or blow thru?

CHiNO84gsl 03-01-09 05:41 PM

im not positive if it is the original motor or not i thaught it was but sein as there was a bolt that went from the tranny to the motor that was missing i bealive it was taken out befor but i think its the original motor. Im going blow thru thats what the second gen exuast mani is for. but can ne one help me with my money issues id like to know what to do about the change in my motor.

CHiNO84gsl 03-01-09 06:46 PM

ha lol that suprises me i didnt think that this would be a common solution. and i dont think so ive had this car since i was 15 im almost 18 now ive been on the forum for a while now but i had a different user name. but thanks for the input if ne one else has done the same thing or used something else that might work bettr pleaze lemme know.

a lot of people do that..... some times the quarters dont seat well and your manifold wont mount flush.

i used some brass soft plugs i got from checker. ( 20mm i think) put some permitex (sp) on it and tap it in. :)

Jeezus 03-03-09 09:06 PM

20mm Freeze plugs will work in the coolant passages.

I have also used the quarter trick, it held well for about 5 or 6 manifold swaps.

trochoid 03-03-09 10:03 PM

Yep, 20 mm freeze plugs. Dorman part# 101-505 or 505-101, don't have the box laying on my desk as usual. Make sure you get all of the silicone out and I lightly run a die grinder with a sanding roll around the inside edge of the hole, then mix up some J-B Weld to seal the plug. Use a short 3/8" extension with a socket that fits just inside the lip of the plug and make sure you tap it in straight. I have a couple engines running around that have an extra plug that was tapped too far and now sit inside the water jacket. :banghead:

Most turbos aren't water cooled and I have yet to see an aftermarket one that is. Just make sure you let the engine idle for a few minutes before shutting down after a hard run or install a tiubo timer.

If/while you still have the engine out, clean/refurbish/paint everything that you can. Btw, where's your fan shroud? They aren't just for safety, they do help a great deal on cooling and with a turbo you'll need all the cooling you can get.

CHiNO84gsl 03-04-09 01:26 PM

Thanks for the alternatives to my money issue. and im in the proccess now its bein sprayed black the red is already on there will post pics when its done. think im gonna do the quarter trick tho seein as its been done more than i thought ill just seal it bettr than the po and make sure its as flush as posible.

Fresh pics of the motor i just took now lookin nice after paint.

CHiNO84gsl 03-04-09 02:27 PM

the fan shroud was already cracked when i first got her cant tell from old pics but it started falling apart after so i just got rid of it seeing as it was in my way. i plan on getting a efan in the future something like an mr2 or taurus fan was im also considering the one from black dragon, but that will happen once all the stuff is back in the car and i get a fmoc.

So its been a while cuz i been a little buisy :weed:. but i finally got some work done The front cover has been drilled and tapped for the reurn and the the motor has been painted and put back in still missing a few pices but when its ready they will go back.

I should be boost preping the carb this week (Wouldnt be possible without Rob) might post pick for those curious on doing this at home. I still need quite a few bit n peices like locked dizzy, rrfpr, and wb02 b4 i can even get this thing running and tunned right! :wallbash:

Also since i couldnt do ne work outside due to wheather Ive been playing around in the basement with Modding the tail lights (Was inspired by Firebirdslayers car) looks good so far and its real easy aslong as you know how to work with fiber glass...If ne one is intrested then pm me and i will give you more details as to how im going about it but if enuff people ask i might do a write up? Also might do a dual beam sleepy eye if i can afford it already got them made in my head.

Thanks again to Rob bcuz without the help I would be lost :Wconfused. But here are the pics!
