12at problems.... i've almost had it with this thing..

so i went out to finally try to get my 85 GS that i just bought "inspected". it has no emissions.

i drove it from seattle to houston with no problems. it has always been hard to start though. once it started it would have a lumpy idle. sometimes, the idle would be great. i get it home and wait a few days. a few days becomes a week and now i'm ready to get it "inspected". so i go outside and start it up. it starts right away. as soon as i get on the main road, it stalls on me, so i pull to the side and see what's up. no, i can't get it to start back up because it's flooded. i'm so close to my house that i walk back and get some tools. i take out the spark plugs and try to unflood the motor. no dice. the compression is strong.

i've tried this twice and i'm very pissed off. new plugs and wires. the motor is a rebuilt jspec converted to a blow through carb..(i have no fucking idea WHY it was converted) anyways, i'm a grade A fucking nut when it comes to carbs and a smart guy when it comes to EFI. what the hell is wrong with this thing? what do i need to do to start it up? all i wanna do is drive!

my DD has been a '95 red windstar the last 8 months. i'm about to just fucking sell this thing...

any help is more than welcome.

1st things first:::

1.check standing battery voltage...{ 12.6 is perfect..]

2. make sure fuel pressure is enough..

3. make sure the coil is actually producing a good spark{{ should be nice and blue }}

4.check this by removing a plug wire and grounding the wire to a nearest ground. then crank the car .. here you can see the color of your spark and the condition of your ignition..

also its a good idea to inspect your igniters on the distributor for resistence. the specs should be in the haynes manual..

i think you have an ignition problem..

5. just for kicks make sure the timing of your car is on spec..thats on the back of your hood.

PLEASE KEEP US INFORMED ON YOUR RESULTS..

Hmmm, any chance that an ignitor whent out?

Elysian 06-30-05 12:29 PM

1st thing i would do(and it was the first thing i did to my car, before i ever got a motor working) is wire in a fuel kill switch, even if the flooding is not ur issue, it still helps a lot

Sucks to see your having problems with that car man, hope it all works out well. Did you get it running yet? ALso how did it run when you drove it back down to texas??? Was it fast?

Sir Rupert Hobo 06-30-05 01:18 PM

i pmed you..

Sir Rupert Hobo 06-30-05 01:59 PM

hmm, i think the starter went out trying to start it...

RotorMotorDriver 06-30-05 02:26 PM

If you cranked it excessivly, the battery cables will melt and possibly fail, as well as the contacts inside the starter.

Anyway, I would wonder why it stalled in the first place. I mean, not starting is one thing, but randomly dying while driving it is another, know what I mean? It would make sense if you killed it trying to start from a stop, and then it wouldnt start, or maybe it died when you pushed in the clutch while stopping, something of that nature. But all out just stalling while driving seems that there is an underlying problem thats preventing the engine from running, not just starting.

did that guy tell you all these problems before you bought the car???

Sir Rupert Hobo 06-30-05 08:18 PM

all he said was, there is a hotstart problem. could it be that the ignition failed while running? it's not like there's a vacuum leak anywhere. the thing only has like two lines.

hondahater 06-30-05 10:08 PM

lol probably ignitor or something, real easy to check spark man, just try it and let me know, you should get spark without the starter working

Sir Rupert Hobo 06-30-05 10:12 PM

i know, i'm not a knewb!:)

i really don't want to look at it again for the rest of the day, really. i need to cool down a little. i'll let you guys know what's up.

My 83 usually starts just by turning the key (no choke, no pedal) hot or cold, so when I started having hot start problems I replaced the plugs and all is well.

I think you have crap in your fuel, and your floats are stuck. Thus Flooding the car.
Definately wire in a fuel pump cut-off switch. And try cleaning out the carb. Then add a glass filter before the carb for future inspections.

Oh, and lower your fuel pressure.
