Here is the engine, we are about ready to drop it back in.

12A 87K miles
RB Intake, Holley Carb
Center force S/S Clutch on resurfaced fly wheel
Cleaned and painted engine
powder coated oil pan, waterpump housing (waterpump and AC pulling at powder coating now)
RB dual pully's for main drive and alternator goes on this weekend
a little chrome here and there
Full RB exhaust (ceramic coated)

would ceramic coating help the exhaust system? Edelbrock coats their headers, I was looking into doing this for my exhaust. I have the streetport RB system on my stock 12a.

Ceramic coated exhaust dispates heat faster.

Nothing... as long as you like losing oil pressure and ultimately blowing a motor as the Fram filter comes apart and clogs the oil passages.

looks awesome the same color combo id love my engine to be... But it hasnt blown yet so no need for it to look pretty i guess =/

Is the holley one modded by RB, or is it an off-the-shelfer?

i thought ceramic coating kept the heat in the pipes to reduce heat in the engine bay and protect agains rust and what not

Close, I'm surprised how many people don't know what they're talking about when it comes to exhaust systems. Ceramic coating, or the wrap you see on bikes a lot, raises exhaust temperature. Higher exhaust temperature (usually) means more horsepower. More horsepower = good. Since a coating or a wrap keeps the heat in the pipes, it tends to reduce the overal temperature in the engine bay, which means cooler inlet temps, which also means more horsepower. Even more horsepower = good.

We're not talking Supercharger gains here, maybe 5? 10?, but every little bit counts. When I ran suped up lawnmower engines, the header wrap was good for a tenth of a second a lap... in a 7.0 second lap. I'd take all the tenths I could get, then. (Soaking the air filter in a ziplock with water before qualifying, that was good for pole.... but nobody figured that one out. :) )

So you didn't rebuild the engine? You just took it out, painted it etc, and will soon put it back in?

that's what it sounds like to me.....if I spent the time to take mine out, I'd do a rebuild, especially with the new intake and exhaust.....If I knew how to do a rebuild of course...lol..

We have an FC that is waiting in the wings that we are going to crack open the 13B on. With less than 100K on the 12A we felt no need to go inside as it was running fine when we pulled to do some mods and paint on the car

wow...one of the best looking 12a rebuilds I've seen in some time...you should drop a nice turbo on it...

Fram/frap. See post about plugging hole because that is the only thing they are good for,lol. Detail job is looking sweet, hope you have a lightened steel flywheel

To bad it's not.

you know what is funny with that, I have run nothing but frams on all the vehicles I have ever driven and done oil changes on, and guess what, not a single problem.

Maybe you guys aren't changing your oil often enough?

I know on my pickup its lucky to see 3k on an oil change.

It meets their minimum oem specs. Lets take the difference between a fram and
lets say a napa gold filter. The gold has twice the filtering media as the fram. It has a built in spring towards the top of the filter to prevent the media to lift and allow the oil to bypass the fitler, fram does not. The gold has a silicone check valve that will not swell up under extreme heat. Remember that our engines generate alot of heat unlike any piston motor. Most of the cooling of the our engine is done by the oiling system. We cannot afford to have a mediocre filter on our engines.
You can go longer in between oil changes and not worry that the filter is not doing it's job. It's a matter of dollars and sense, why not use something that is going to help you motor in the long run. Just my 2cents worth. rx7doctor

yeah, I guess I forgot to mention that the 7 never has had a fram on it.

bought it last summer and the single oil change I gave it, put a NAPA Gold on it since it was the only oil filter that could be found. And it was the same oil filter that a co-workers quadbike took o.O

it might have been from on here for all I know, but its chock full of good info.

I use Napa Gold 1347. It's the tall one and the Fram crossover number is PH2849A. I'm not sure what the Napa crossover number is for the short Fram PH3593A. I only use the tall ones because I've got plenty of room. You 1st gen guys may be able t get away with the tall one if perhaps you don't have dealer installed AC, or whatever the usual height restriction is on those cars.
