12A Won't stay running and runs like poo!

Hey guys,

I got a 12a frist gen. Just rebuilt. It was running fine. Then sat for a few days. Now it starts and shuts off after about 3-5 secs. And if i can get it running it sounds like the timing is way off. I checked the coils/wires/plugs, there all getting spark and are all working correctly. I had a few shorts but i fixed them. I am wondering if your distributor is screwed if this will happen? I have played with the timing and it doesn't get better or worst. The igniters are fine i tested them with some my buddy had. I have done everything i can possibly think of! I need your help! Any suggestions at all i would be greatly thankfull for your time.

Did you change your rotor and rotor cap? Also the fuel filter and clean the carb if it wasent' clean. Also check your connection with the Alternator.

Reason I ask is because I have done those and it help me alot.

Pull the plugs and check them. Do a ghetto compression test, check the float levels in the carb and the fuel filter.

Can you tell if the fuel pump is still running when the ignition is in the run position? If not, bypass the the relay.

How many miles on the rebuild?

Rotor and cap are brand new. Fuel filter is not very old but its something i will check. Carb is brand new. I did a ghetto compression test it is like 5 psi off mazda factory spec. Fuel pump is def runing. Right now its on a switch and it is in my engine bay. Its a holley blue with reg. I got like 1,500 k on my rebuild so far. Oh ya as for the carb is a holley 500 it was running great. One of the frist things i did was take it apart and clean it make sure the jets and acl. pump was clean. And ajusted the float.

Anyone have any more suggestions i am turely out of idea's.

I don't believe that you can mount that fuel pump in the engine bay. Those pumps are designed to push, not pull. Have you tested for fuel flow?

Insane rx-7 07-06-06 04:13 PM

Hmm i didn't realize that... But it has great fuel flow... Seems to be working correctly.

Kentetsu 07-06-06 04:15 PM

Sorry, just read that according to RX7Doctor, those pumps can be mounted there after all...

trochoid 07-06-06 05:46 PM

I have a used Holley blue that when mounted near the stock position, will not pull fuel from the tank. If I use a 12" long hose and drop it in a gas can, it will pull, go figure. All fuel pumps should be mounted as near the tank as possible. That is what most of the manufactureer's recommend.

Insane rx-7 07-06-06 06:07 PM

I can understand why. It is probably harder on the pump. But it works fine i am sure my problem is in the ignition. Does anyone know how to test if your distrubtor is working correctly?

Kentetsu 07-06-06 10:19 PM

Just check for spark on the plugs. Check the leading first because that would cause the most noteable difference...
