12a Turbo Clutch??
 

Well guys... I'm rounding the bend on my 12a blowthrough build and need some recommendations on a decent clutch, or at least some feedback from others with similar set-ups.

I'm running a medium streetport with a RayJay turbo (similar to a T04B) running around 10-12 psi daily driving and 15 psi once in a while. I have an 8.5 lb aluminum flywheel that will be getting a new friction surface and the car is my daily driver. I'll be doing a couple track days here and there and have a HP goal in the 300 range.

I've been looking at lots of clutches from Clutchmasers to Bully, even the Ebay stuff. I'd really like to not break the bank on this one and would rather not be pulling my flywheel off in 1500 miles to replace the friction surface.

So.. any thoughts??

upgrade to a turbo tranny and clutch, even the OEM turbo clutch can handle the power but with the n/a tranny you'll have to sacrifice and run a puck clutch which won't last nearly as long, as well the stock tranny isn't going to like that much power.

the setup i use is ....street strip(rb)pressure plate....act 6puck. i like because it ease on your legs and grab when you need it.

I have a 4 puck ACT springless with street strip pp on a daily driver for probally 6 years now. When I pulled the trans, clutch and flywheel to get at a leaking freeze out plug last year the surfaces were all doing fine. (in reference to you pulling flywheel in 1500 miles..?) Yea it grabs almost immediatly but you get used to it quickly. And I often switch from RX7 to truck which is also 5 speed. The clutch on my truck grabs sloppy loosey goosey and when I get back into the RX I adapt instantly.

I have a ceramic/kevlar clutch in the widebody. Has a near stock feel and will hold the hp goal you're looking at. Billy has one for around $400 or look on eBay. I found my Stage 3 for $300.

Is your's a segmented Kevlar? What brand, if you remember.

Don't recall the brand but Billy lists a similiar/same one on his website. I suppose one could call it a segmented one, but the friction material occupies the reverse of what a puck clutch does, if that makes any sense. It looks like it's what's left over of the friction stock after the pucks have been cut out of the blank.

Also, buy a well known brand like ACT. Don't get it "sprung", it's just more shit that will likely break off at the worst possible moment anyway.

Get 6 puck unsprung, with a Heavy Duty pressure plate. (not the Extreme)
Get a 4 puck unsprung if you're going for more power - 375+

There is nothing like the crappy sensation of having your clutch and pressure plate explode in the middle of 4th gear, and wrecking your engine and engine compartment. - I know this all too well. (God Damn "Spec" clutches.)

I will be upgrading to a T2 tranny in the future, but I'm still about $1k shy of finishing this project, and dropping an extra $500 plus in it right now isn't feasible. Besides... it gives me another excuse to spend the WHOLE day in the garage, or as I like to call it my man cave.

Sometimes I pull out a can of brake cleaner and hose down the floor just so my girl will go back in the house... she hates the smell of brake cleaner.

Yes sir, that's the clutch disc. Very pleased with it and no problems spinning the 245/50/ZR15 tires. :)
