12a oiling trouble
 

I'll jump straight to the point. Car randomly started burning a TON of oil today. It stopped for about 5 minutes then started again. I checked the oil, was low(obviously) added more and it started smoking again.

My friend and I took a look at it after i let it sit for a while, and the oil level was almost double what it should be..Would too much oil cause a lot of burning? Can there be oil slosh in the pan? Pump pumping too much oil? Too thin of oil?(10w30)

Im stumped. First time the car has been taken on a lengthy drive in a long time.

no. the bottom of the engine isn't open to the oil in the pan like a piston engine. sounds like it's just a case of bad oil control O rings.

how can the oil level be double what it should be? if its that high, then it might be able to get sucked up the PCV and into the engine.

Im not sure to be honest. I seafoamed the motor, then i flushed everything out today, changed the oil and now it's fine..I'm pretty damn sure it was the PCV thing, a friend of mine told me the same thing

Also check that your oil metering pump isn't jammed open

How certain are you of this? With my old motor, I performed an oil change according to the Haynes manual, only to find out that the amount of oil they specify is for cars with a front mount oil cooler. As a result, I over filled the engine by about 1 1/2 quarts.

As soon as I drove the car, it left a smoke screen that literally shut down a freeway. Even after draining out the excess oil, the oil control rings were never the same. I ran Lucas in the oil to control it for a couple of years until that motor died at 213,000 miles.

I had always assumed that it was the high oil level that caused this, and it seems like a big coincidence if this is not the case. :)

i can't be since i've never over filled an engine with oil. my main response was to his oil slosh in the pan. and after re-thinking about that, the only part of the engine that IS open to the oil in the pan is the area behind the front cover. but if it is possible that a rotary engine will smoke from being overfilled with oil then i learned something new.

It would really take some great evidence to convince me otherwise. The effects were nearly instantaneous. I drove no more than two miles after the oil change before the smoke screen started up.

I should also mention that this was years ago. :) I have since learned to check the level before starting the car. lol.

the rx8's are really picky about it, overfill by like 1/2 quart and its smokescreen....

in the FB/FC the normal regular oil level is right about where the oil pan meets the block, so there actually isn't a lot of volume left down there
