12A dual altenator pulley!

I am in the process of taking off my fan and putting an Efan on my car , and i was wondering if i needed a double pulley for my altnator, and if I do where can i find one cheap1 thanx

rx7passion 09-07-02 03:21 PM

you dont really need one, but they are helpful. cheapest umm i think theres a guy in the second gen section selling ones for like 25$ i think, they are universal too so you dont need a "12a brand"

Manntis 09-07-02 04:08 PM

I bought one off of a guy through this forum for $20.

Since then I've received PMs from others saying it won't fit a 1st gen alt (I can't see how, as they're more or less interchangeable) and the tracking # I was given for the shipment is right out to lunch and I've no idea if it's on its way, if FedEx sent it to Cali instead of Canada (happens to me all the time) or if I got taken.

i got mine off ebay fro 27 shipped it said it was for a second gen but it was great. and they all will work it is the same drive size and everything. Some one said there is one for a eclipse that will fit but i never heard an exact part number.

i think i remember seeing someone post something about a Mitsubishi part that could be used ... and i believe they said it cost 5 bucks. might be worth searching for it.

hope this helps.

So I followed the "3L220" belt idea instead, little belt that goes from the "crank" over the water-pump, cost me $4.50 canadian from lordco. :)

a double pulley is helpful if you remove your air pump

Why, thanks for that useful insight, I bet nobody had gathered that! ... wtf?

Manntis 01-02-03 09:52 PM

The original post ststed he was removing his FAN and wondered if he needed a pulley conversion. Inittab was pointing out the pulley conversion is intended for AIR PUMP, not FAN, removal.

I got the best deal of a life time,I got to my friends junk yard...See a double pulley on a FB..I knwo they never came with a double alt pulley and in black.Took a speaker out of a car..Ckeck the metal, the magnet didnt stick to it,Meaning its made out of other metal than steel,Take some paint off and it was aluminum.Well $5.00 later I own a close to brand new (RB ?) aluminum pulley.

Has anyone tried the lawnmower belt trick? The pineapple racing guy thought of it. That looked like it would work better than the dual pulley setup.

Yea that works fine too. 3L220.

Please explain the lawnmower belt trick in more detail.

Its a smaller belt that you just put over the main crank and the water pump. The belt is the "3L220". This eliminates the need for the dual belt alternator pully, yet still gives you a dual belt on the water pump.

I'm not sure if it's my car in particular or what, but the 3L220 belt is a little too loose for my liking. I'm going to look for a 3L215 belt if possible, or stretch on a 3L210 belt today. I'll get back to ya about my success or lack thereof later :)

3L210 is so g'damn tight it will not work at all, I just flipped my 3L220 upside down and it seems tight enough, doesn't appear to be eating itself and hasn't thrown off, so all is good...

Got a new altenator belt and made sure it's tighter too ;)

Rx7carl 02-26-03 09:01 PM

You dont want it too tight, itll put alot of stress on the e shaft front extension, which will cause early front bearing failure . Use the damn 3L220..Please :)
