100 MPH in 3rd
 

Has anyone ever hit 100 MPH in 3rd gear. I did it earlier this afternoon, when my car came out of the shop! It felt like my car was floating!:bigthumb:

I think your speedometers broken.

100 in 3rd seems difficult... Mine is screaming at 85 in 3rd.. I don't think your gear ratios are any different from mine, as the only change I know of was in 5th gear..

What if he has a 4 speed? I know my 79 id different than my 85SE

when i dyno'd, i did a 3rd gear pull to redline, and i was around 85-90mph, so i guess if you peg it way past redline.. maybe

The previous owner, own an Rx7 shop. So I dont know what he did to it, on top of what I have done!

All I know is that when I put it into 4th, the speedo was at 100MPH.

I remember running the numbers for my 83, around 7200 in 3rd was 90mph with 205/50/15 tires.

stock diff ring and pinion ratio tom? stock sized tires or shorter?

Well, I was way past redline.

ha ha. I have, Mchacfe can vouch for doing 100mph in 3rd as we entered on to the interstate, we got it on tape! At a 100mph, I am about ~8500rpm and ready to shift. Heres the estimated speeds and engine speeds I've learned over time assuming the tach is guessing the engine speed relatively well.

1st gear 30mph@7000rpm, 45mph@8500rpm
2nd gear 50mph@7000rpm, 70mph@8500rpm
3rd gear 80mph@7000rpm, 100mph@8500rpm
4th gear 110mph@7000rpm, 130mph@8000rpm
5th gear 120mph@6000rpm,

Ok for this next figure, I will not admit driving this fast, but.... 135mph@7000rpm, 5th gear. :D

Ive redlined my car in every gear but 5th. I dont go past the redline unless Im REALLY determined, or its an accident.

I guess I should of mentioned, I would never shift any higher then 8000rpm if I was driving a engine with steel seals. Very bad for rotor housings.

Whats 100mph in Km/h? I am changing to 4th at about 150 -160 km and in 5th over the 200k mark, that is changing between 6500 -7k rpm. 13B NA with S4 5 speed gearbox. 185/70/13 tyres.

Oh yes IT IS POSSABLE TO GO OVER 100 mph in 3rd gear :D With a street porteded motor... MANEY MANEY MANEY TIMES... *ONLY AT YOUR OWN RISK*

Hell you dont even need a streetported motor. Just a lack of concern for your engine would do just fine.

Highest i went was 85mph in second,and 110 in 3rd.
Its definately possible.All depends on what your racing against! :-)

Yes.. i've been with WackyRotary, and he easily hits 100mph in 3rd gear. It's pretty sweet. My tach doesn't work so well in my car (83 12a), so I don't think i've ever taken it officially up to redline in any gear, because I can't tell! I usually shift at 40mph in 2nd, and 60mph in 3rd.

I used to hit 95 in third gear in my RX4 pretty regularly without redlining it. Different ratios, probably. Also, I've found that rotaries are about as fast in 4th gear as in 5th gear, at least with stock ports.

It is bad for the seals, but especially the rotor housings because above 6200rpm they start to bounce and cause chatter marks and becomes violently potentially damaging at 8500rpm, hence the limit of steel seals at 8500rpm, even though you shouldn't rev that high with them. Chatter marks and flaking caused from this lowers the maximum compression you will ever get out of the housings no matter how new your seals and springs are.

Only bridgeports or perpherals with carbon seals or other special race seals should nessessate reving beyond 8000rpm often unless you want to ruin your rotor housings quickly and your still using stock seals on a stock or mildport and the power curve drops off before 8500rpm.

Its bad for the apex seals, but you can more readily cost effectively replace apex seals compared to rotor housings, unless you want them to be one-time use rotor housings or lower then spec compression and less power if reused.

Now for carbon seals, there is much less mass to them and don't bounce at high rpm and are non-destructive to the housing surface even when they break, assuming you stop the engine quickly after breaking one. But they also don't seal as well below 3000rpm, not that it matters since I don't spend any time there.
