Where to finds Gen 1's

A new guy here. I owned a Gen 1 from 1982-1986 and a Gen 2 from 1986 to 1988. I recently retired and am looking for a good solid Gen 1 to drive and play with in the garage.

I got the BRZO app and have been searching Craigslist. Also been using Classic Autotrader. I have been involved with other cars for a long time and there always seems to be a site where enthusiasts go to sell and buy. I haven't found it yet.

Can anyone suggest other websites or even a publication that I can add into my search?

THANKS!

Go to the classifieds here on this site. Craigslist is the other best option. Bringatrailor has them occasionally and they are usually in better shape but will cost more.

Got mine on ebay, so that is always worth a regular check-in. Surprising number of nice SAs and FBs come up regularly. With winter setting in, there may be some deals to be had since this is not really "sports car season". Your choices expand exponentially if you are willing to travel. And since there seems to be a Forum member most everywhere, use folks here to be your eyes on the ground if possible. I lived in Alaska when I got mine in San Diego! Be patient. Yours is out there!

Thanks guys. Much appreciated.

Am I correct that classifieds on this site are part of the Regional sections, or am I just missing a consolidated section?

no, you need at least 10 posts to access the classifieds, so you got 8 to go, 7 if you respond to me

And reply I will! Thanks for the clarification.

Is there a sticky that goes through things to look for when buying?

There is a classified section in some regional sections. However, there is a "cars for sale" section that is specific to each generation.

I haven't seen a checklist to use when buying a car. If you're interested in a car that's not local to you ask for a lot of pictures and information. Good luck with your search, I'm also looking to pick one up.

VeryRed997 11-09-17 08:39 AM

Thanks 1badrx7. I think I found one reasonablely close to me so I can go drive one. :)

1BADRX7 11-10-17 04:51 AM

Be sure to post up some pictures if you pick it up!

Onecraigs - it's a nationwide Craigslist search. Be prepared to travel to find a good one.

VeryRed997 11-16-17 01:46 PM

"OneCraigs" That's a new one. Thanks.

And the BRZO app on Apple is good too.

Deal in place for a 1985 SE. Going to the dealer for an inspection to confirm no rust before we exchange $$$.

Has a couple of things I will address after I take delivery but over all, pretty nice car. Hope to pick it up next week. :D

Hoping it's everything you're wanting in the Gen 1 experience. Good looking car, and we're here to help with anything you need to dig into. Let us know how it goes,

Nice! Keep us posted if you get it. I'm seeing more available cars on the east coast vs. the west.

I read through your thread about the rust last week or two. I wish you the best of luck if getting it fixed. It's hard to find these "hidden" issues until we start to take parts off of the car.

VeryRed997 12-05-17 09:44 AM

The car passed the dealer PPI. No rust. They pulled carpets and, of course, put it up on a lift to check everything on the bottom.

The only "new" thing they found was "dampness" around the brake master cylinder and the oil pan. Are there known, fixable issues with the master cylinder, or is this a case to just buy a used / rebuilt / new unit?

And delivery is now scheduled for Thursday afternoon!

KansasCityREPU 12-05-17 10:14 AM

Buy new master cylinder from RockAuto or like site.

1BADRX7 12-13-17 06:24 AM

I agree, buy new and you won't have to worry about it for a while.

VeryRed997 12-13-17 06:33 AM

Interesting situation now. The dealer that did the PPI topped off the master cylinder with fluid. I drove the car home 100 miles or so, and have driven it around town a few times the weather has permitted. Zero change in the brake fluid level. No drips of any type on the garage floor. Makes me wonder what is going on.

Is there a procedure to test the master cylinder?

t_g_farrell 12-13-17 07:33 AM

You will need to go over the whole car bit by bit and replace any old rubber (hoses, bushings, lines etc) and wear items (brakes, clutch, shocks, etc) to be sure there are no issues. Otherwise, drive until something real turns up then fix, rinse and repeat. Sounds like its a nice 7. Show us some love and toss some pics up here.

I got it home last Thursday and immediately gave it a quick bath because weather was due to roll in that evening. I only got to drive it twice Sunday-Monday and didn’t go any place for good photos. So just the attached shot right after the wash.

Looks nice and clean! Congrats on the purchase!

Good looking SE,my favorite color...

The other place you can usually find these cars for cheap is on Facebook Marketplace. We have a few of them that keep getting reposted locally for dirt cheap. Now if I only wasn't in school and had a huge pole barn to store some in...someday...

Mills 12-21-17 06:00 PM

Beautiful car, love the color! Get us some more pics when you have time :)

What's the build date on it? I notice it has the painted mirrors, is the interior gray or charcoal?
