What are these 2 clear tubes in the back

In the back of Rusty the 84 GS. The rear hatch panel is rusted out and I found 2 clear hoses 1/4 I think on each side. Some kind of drain? Whatever they where hooked up to is there in a pile of rust dust. I looked in the manuals didn't see that part in the back.

They are back there near the tail lights. I have looked around but if anyone has some photos of the rear hatch area under the carpet that would help me a lot to compare.

I think you are referring to the drain tubes for the drain holes in the bottom of the hatch glass.

LOL what bottom? heheh.. Thanks I think I need to find a body that I can just chop the back and have it welded onto my rustbucket.

The only thing between the glass and the body is some Gorilla tape.

The vehicle was left to rot in the Sun for many years. I don't know I found a 1989 Yale campus sticker so it was at Yale once. And I know it sat for at least 3-4 years in Galveston and that's what really did it. Rita I think and a few other floods. Pics of the rust damage are in the 1st gen pics sticky.

Yeah, there is a rain drip rail where the window meets the body.

I think those are the conduits for the rear speakers, part of the stock Clarion sound system. These days a lot of folks upgrade the rear speakers with after markets that fill up the rear hatch area.

They are definitely the rear drain tubes as stated above

Yea thanks. That would normally be here... lol

Speaking of those tubes, you guys have any good ways to clear those tubes, or how easy they are to replace.

Piece of wire and compressed air, worked for me

I was going to just use the car for parts but I think it can be saved. The frame, bumper connections, strut housing etc all have no rust. In fact 3 of the wheel wells look almost new. That green stuff is Hammerite Rust Cap.

82transam 02-19-08 10:21 AM

Mine wasn't quite that bad, but i ended up replaceding that whole back section, its doable, but quite a big of work, hope your handy with a welder ;)

Vashner 02-19-08 02:47 PM

I am just gonna seal up the rust with more Hammerite or Por 15 and keep the back taped for a while. Later I'll hire a real body shop to cut the back out and swap or Ranchero it.

What should I use to close that gap then put the Por 15 over it for the quick fix?

I don't need to use the hatch since it's a daily driver. I'll rig the thin spare up top and tie it down so if I need to I can pull it out the door or can just cut the tape again to get to tire. Hum I guess i'll need to do that unless I have to leave the wheel on the street or put it on the front seat (not)...

If anyone has some inside pics of the inner rear wall please share I need to look at it. Manuals are not cutting it.
