What do you like/ hate most about your 1st gen??

Title says it all...

Like: it's unique; A car that started a huge impact in the motor industry.;) . Love how people turn their heads to look at it when I'm driving...

Hate: not enough aftermarket parts for it (when compared to other popular cars) :squintfin

Wodihor 10-08-07 03:52 PM

I love the enjoyment of driving it
I hate that it will not run

Well I love my car. Handles great veerry fun car to drive. Not slow enogh to lose to civics or lightly modded 240's and such. Turn heads everywhere i go with it everyone loves the car and are suprised on how quick it is for a pretty much stock car. Lots of power off of simple bolt ons.

Hates-Rotary sounds like crap if you dont do the exhaust right.Bad gas milage not a lot of aftermarket parts for it. No lsd i think the limited Ed should have came with a lsd. ummm i think thats about it really.

BlackWorksInc 10-08-07 03:59 PM

Loves: Its a fun, light sports car with 4 disc brakes, LSD, and nice Tokico suspension setup. The engine says its 100HP, but sometimes she feels way more powerful.

Hates: Not nearly enough aftermarket parts as one would hope. The car has a lot of difficult quirks (Like how tight the wiring is in some places and the plastic stuff cracking since its so old.)

Most importanty, how difficult it is to find parts... I just went to the two Pick Your Parts in the Bay Area and the only FB I found was a 79... too bad all the parts I needed were more in the 80-85 range...

mustanghammer 10-08-07 04:42 PM

Loves:

It is way better balanced than my old Mustang
It dosen't break down as much as my old Mustang
I haven't pulled an engine in 5 years!!!
The GSL brakes work GREAT in racing environment
You can beat the hell out it in a race and it is still ready for more abuse
It has RWD
The sound of my engine at 8K!
The fact that other racers HATE the sound of my engine at 8K when I pass them!
Parts cars are a dime a dozen
I can buy parts for my RACECAR at O'Rielly's Auto Parts!

Hates:

Nikki carbs are a PIA to keep tuned
No steering box parts
It's not a Miata - we get limited support and publicity
Some aftermarket suppliers and the SCCA are starting to forget FB's exist

trochoid 10-08-07 05:06 PM

Enjoy the attention the widebody gets, same with the 2nd gen DD. Except with the tinted windows on both, the local popo like to follow me, thinking I'm some ricer kid that's going to get stupid.

Derived a great deal of satisfaction from building the widebody, but it seems like it's a project that will never get finished because I keep upgrading here and there. It's a blast to drive, even though the exhaust is way too loud. Handles like a go kart and nearly rides like one. Suprisingly, the Netami seats help with the bad back.

Get a kick out some of the stupid questions people ask and most of them misidentify the car. Porsche seems to be the most popular guess, lol.

Like:
180degree turns on normal streets, eze.
Easy to work on
Once understood = reliable
Cheaper than other performance cars
Top of the line from its time, and still stands like that to me.
Scaring the crap out of passengers with its unique handling abilities.
Drafting anything. Decent performance stock.
De Car is a kind of secksee un-common.

Hate:
Stalkers, rubbernecks, & lookie'loos who dont leave money in the cars wipers... BSTERDS!!!! fund this!!!!
It snows were i live.
Finding 13" tires that are performance and IN STOCK.
Deciding which way to mod the intake/exhaust. only solution? have 2 engines or 2 cars.. hate not having 2 sweet gen1.
Waiting 10+years for the rx8 to come into my price range so i can swap its overcomplicated rig in for 200+ NA ponies.
Deathtrap over .. what.. 45mph? oh well..

85 FB 10-08-07 05:39 PM

Like: A pleasure to drive. It's an '85 and the way it was built taking into the affect of the year? Outstanding. Changing the alternator is easy to do. Fluid-revving engine.

Dislike: Changing the water pump is a PITA. Have to remove all those items just to get to it. Only one real place to get a full exhaust setup. Parts for this car are rare and expensive. 22 year old car = lots of things that need to be repaired. Car is so small and low to the ground that it can be hit, T-boned, side-swiped easily. :wallbash:

Cascadia 10-08-07 05:39 PM

What I Like?

The look of it when I bought it in '82, and the look of it now.
The handling is like no other car I have ever owned
The amount of power you get out of a little 70 cubic inch engine!

What I dislike? . . . hmmmmm. . . . I'll have to think about that . . . nope . . nothing!!

Box_Man 10-08-07 05:52 PM

Likes:
-Unique rotary engine
-Relatively clean body
-Rear drive
-EASY TO WORK ON!
-Exhaust note sounds excellent, even with crap exhaust.

Dislikes:
-surprise rust
-noisy drivetrain
-odd bolt pattern
-expensive parts (compared to my old CRX)

twinkletoes 10-08-07 06:34 PM

I love everything about it..it's small, rotary, rwd, etc..only thing I don't like is when i floor it..haha..slow

Jeezus 10-08-07 06:36 PM

Likes:
Willingness of abuse
"I think I can, I think I can" and does it... beyond expectation
Going through tunnels in third at 4000 Full throttle

Dislikes:
It's a Porsche...wait
Ricers won't leave you alone
The kicking/bucking at 2000 rpms when off the gas.

ray green 10-08-07 06:42 PM

I love working on it and fixing it up:

Love: TRUE sports car that I can afford. Its a joy to drive. Design by car guys for car guys

Hate: own it since 2004 and I´ve never took her around the block yet :( (its not the cars fault, its me ... Im poor)

F-111a 10-08-07 07:30 PM

Likes (many):
  • Timeless body lines that still don't look dated. People often can't believe the car is 25 years old, and not 5 or 10.
  • Extremely rare (especially in the U.K.) and you never see another one on the road.
  • Parts are still readily available and relatively inexpensive.
  • Engines are interchangeable with later 13B through 2002, with good aftermarket upgrade options.
  • Light weight and 400hp can make for a rocketship.
  • Fuel economy is reasonably good.
  • Interior is spacious with plenty of room for cargo.
  • Very easy and straightforward to work on. Everything is easy to access. You don't need to constantly pull the engine or have hands the size of a rhesus monkey to work on the car.
  • They don't disintegrate into a pile of rust like some other older sports cars
Dislikes (very few):
  • Cheap-looking and poor quality interior; vinyl material is prone to cracking and some models even have simulated plastic stitching moulded into the plastic dash. (Fake stitching: What the HELL?)
  • Wheelwells are undersized; fitting even 225 tyres isn't easy in back (custom axles), and requires wheelwell modification in front.
  • Extremely rare, thus every stop can draw curious onlookers. (Only bad when you don't have the time to chat.)
  • Travel to a competent rotary engine specialist can mean a long journey.

busterz 10-08-07 08:35 PM

Rides so much nicer than my CRX did !!

P_Lav 10-08-07 08:36 PM

Good:
-Such a blast to drive
-The sound of a rotary, and being able to redline it everytime
-When people ask how many cylinders it has;and you say none
-More power than any honda, smaller engine than any honda
-sport suspension, 4 disc brakes, lsd, aluminum wheels:stock
-Light weight
-2 seater- no driving your pals around at 3 in the morning when you gotta work the next day
-True sports car, for a cheap assed price (i paid a grand for mine)
-Very reliable, gets beaten on week in and week out, and keeps coming back for more
-People ask if its a Porsche

Bad:
-Old car is rotted out and needs a new repair every week
-I don't even ask parts stores if they have it in stock
-Factory parts cost an arm and a leg ($800 for 2 injectors, wtf)
-Burgandy interior-might have been nice in 85', but not in 07
-Unflooding it everyday gets annoying
-Almost no aftermartet support
-People ask if its a Porsche

jshiz 10-08-07 08:56 PM

Good= the thrill of driving it.
Simplicity of design.
The attention
The sound of the motor
Can rely on it
300 lbs wieght limit (No Fat chicks lol)

Bad = No aftermarket parts
People think its a porshe, or a 300z
If i hit a pot hole, I'm F***ed
My passenger side window is screwed
When it rains hard, i have to get my shop vac and get the water out of the hatch....

That sums it up

Dan_s_young 10-08-07 09:55 PM

Good:
Brings me enjoyment
An awesome hobby to keep me busy
The community
The wealth of knowledge available
Unique engine

Bad:
Well the widebody is quite the money pit at this point, but it shouldn't be as bad right away here...

FIBREMAZ 10-08-07 10:11 PM

Likes-
The fact that my car looks unique
The fact that not many people are ballsy enough to run a PP on the street these days so having one is a bit of a novelty
The sound
The handling
Having a tidy Aussie delivered S1 (mostly Savannas)
Being able to smoke 98% of new cars

Jaye 10-08-07 10:30 PM

Likes:

Lightweight
Balance
Raspy Motor sound
Steady state handling

Dislikes:

The steering sucks...even perfect recirculating ball steering sucks.
Solid rear axle
A little bit of bump steer
Doesn't have the transient response I'd like but hey its over 20 years old.

orion84gsl 10-09-07 08:38 AM

Likes:

I've learned that I can do most of the work on this car myself, partly because I'm not as mechanically incompetent as I thought, and because the car is so damn simple.
It's a real sports car, not a commuter with an exhaust.
RB SP exhaust at 7000RPM
It's the one thing I've dumped money into that I can actually say was a good idea.

Dislikes:

The steering
People can't seem to leave it alone. Wheels stolen, hood keyed. What's next?
Expensive/hard to find parts
When it snows, I can't/won't drive it

-Has a Rotary
-getting compliments on her
-AC works great!!!

Dislikes:

-Alot of parts are not on stock at the auto parts store..they have to be special orered.
-Water pump is a pain in the ass the change becase of all the shit that you have to take off to get to it lol! -
-She is over 20 years old so she is rough aroun d the edges in some areas
- Damn water leaks in the doors even though the DAMN DOOR SEALS ARE BRAND NEW!!!

aussiesmg 10-09-07 11:49 AM

Likes

She is unusual enough to stand out
She is a genuine looker/sports car
She rides like a go kart
She responds to minimal improvements
She lovingly accepts and does whatever I ask of her
She stays home when I do
Buy her some new shoes and she clings with enthusiasm
She doesn't like bling
Always accepts it when I want to change something about her
I can't stop doing things to her

Dislikes

Why can't women be like her...........

bugman1973 10-09-07 01:04 PM

likes well lets see
the engine has lots of power
pop up head lights
seat backs are not plastic
its a hatch back kind of
its a cheap sports car
lots of engine mods if you know where to look
easily fit 245's under the rear end no mods 225 up front no rubbing
suspension is cheap
the fact that you can blow somebodies mind just by telling them about how hot the exhaust is; even at a muffler shop
there is a lot more to like about it just drawing a blank

dislikes
people that don't know what they have even when its gone
that people always complain about the price of parts
that all i don't like about the car besides people not knowing an rx7 when they see one
