The Twins Swap Thread

The swap begins today. I am swapping out the blown motor and swapping in my motor from my current daily driver. In the process I am going to repaint the new car and hopefully have a good amount of pictures of the process.

So far I've swapped the wheels over...

Looking good man. I have similar plans of bay cleaning, when I do my manual transmission swap. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Glazedham42 03-20-08 09:11 AM

What tire size are you running on the Rewinds? Your car looks like a twin to mine. Same color, same suspension setup all the way around except for the wheels. :D

Jamie

tallbozo 03-20-08 10:32 AM

the tires are 205/50/15's. Yeah I should have it all painted tonight. I will take more pictures that are step by step with the old motor for those who want the instructions.

notveryhappyjack 03-20-08 03:18 PM

so sick man. glad too see your bringing it back. I always thought the engine bay was pretty darn clean but those pics prove that it was a lil bit dirty

what exterior color are you planning on going with?

tallbozo 03-20-08 03:41 PM

a darker graphite gray color that is close to the color of the wheels. Im hoping to do all the body-work myself since i live with 2 guys who work at body shops. I was gonna ask do you know what brand of clutch it has?

RW-7 03-20-08 05:42 PM

Lookin good mang! Can't wait til Saturday. We'll get it goin in no time.:bigthumb:

tallbozo 03-20-08 11:53 PM

So We got it painted. Whe I say we I mean my friend Brian (Who works at a custom body shop), my friend Luke (who works at a body shop), and me know doesn't know all that much.

We used Krylon Rust Tough Enamel with a semi-flat finish (black). I used a scotch scratch pad to prep the painted surface and then finished it up with a wax/grease remover.

http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l1...Picture112.jpg

Then we taped it off and started to paint (again We implies Brian)...

The finished look is amazing. I am really happy how it turned out.

Yeah so tomorrow Im putting as much as I can back in the freshly painted car and then pulling the motor out of the old one and hopefully installing it.

More pics to come!!!

pinoyremix 03-21-08 12:06 AM

And then I'm going to paint this black to match...

Oh and He did some fab work for RW-7. He welded some side patches for this rotor shaped headlight intake.

tallbozo 03-23-08 12:32 PM

The night before the engine is gonna be installed, I decided to pull it early and clean it up. It has a small oild leak and never had a splash pan, so it was pretty dirty.

http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l1...Picture167.jpg
http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l1...Picture168.jpg

I called it a night and let it dry out.

tallbozo 03-23-08 12:40 PM

So its finally done. Early saturday morning Robert came up and helped me install the already pulled motor. It needed a new clutch which he brought for me, and he installed a front mount oil cooler.

http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l1...Picture177.jpg
http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l1...Picture178.jpg
http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l1...Picture179.jpg

We got it installed and got the front mount oil cooler on and hoped that the radiator would fit behind, but its too big so I'll need to get a smaller one.

Then I went to pull my beloved exhaust off the old car and found that the muffler guy welded the center section with the muffler...so I had to use the exhaust that came with the car (I miss my magnaflow...)

http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l1...Picture174.jpg

I also found out my ignition is shot. Turned the key off and pulled it out and it was still on...suck...oh well at least it starts and runs.

All in all it was a good swap I would say and Great Thanks to everyone who put time in for me. Brian, Luke, Kyle, Robert, and Luke's Mom for the garage.

Here's some pictures of the final product...

notveryhappyjack 03-23-08 02:46 PM

you made me proud.
good work.

I'm not sure of when the clutch was replace or what brand it was, sorry it came with the car when I bought it.

When you repaint it, I assume you are going to take the molding off the car ?

pinoyremix 03-23-08 03:17 PM

nice work man..looks good...im gonna have robert help me install my dell 48 after i get it and some parts...the carb is almost here..

RW-7 03-23-08 04:12 PM

Ya thats gonna be a fun little project too.

tallbozo 03-23-08 05:27 PM

The clutch was shot anyways. My old one was starting to slip so Robert just brought be one. I think I am going to paint it a darker metallic gray.

FirebirdSlayer666 03-23-08 08:52 PM

Very nice indeed. Makes me anxious to try and get my motor rebuilt and back in my FB. What's wrong with the RB exhaust set up? Too quiet for you?

notveryhappyjack 03-23-08 10:50 PM

that exhaust is not quiet at all my friend. it reminds me of the sound of three chainsaws surrounding you all reving full throttle with the straight pipe section. it will shoot nice flames tho

rb mufflers sound like ass imo, he is right magnaflow is what that car needs. If you want help welding a magnaflow in I could give you a hand. just kinda far, not sure how many miles newberg is from kirkland. just a thought.

FirebirdSlayer666 03-23-08 11:27 PM

I love the sound of my RB. I have almost the same exhaust only it collects sooner. Mine isn't loud in the least bit. Driving around town it's very tame but she roars when I open her up. A Magnaflow is just going to make it so much louder unless you add multiple magnaflow's
