Sub mount location

I have this 6.5 inch sub, which hits better than most 12's i've heard. I'm trying to find a place to mount that whole getup so it wont roll around and will be fairly out of the way.I was thinking behind the passenger seat right on top of the storage bins facing the drivers seat, and making straps that screw in to the metal bar that holds the carpet down.

Ideas?

I would suggest mounting the bass tube facing the hatch.

I've never understood why people mount them facing away from them? Im just talking here, so correct me if I'm wrong.

When I set my subs up, i usually face them towards the front of the car, then tune them to a nice good level. that way, when you're outside the car, you can barely hear it, or not hear it at all. but when you're IN the car, it sounds loud, etc etc. That's how my 98 lumina is set up. i always thought that when people face them backwards is when they crank them up so everyone including the neighbors can hear it.

I had two 12" Kicker XPLs in a ported box in my 1990 GXL. I tired both directions and facing the hatch seemed to be cleaner sound and hard hitting. Never did understand why this was but to my surprise the car never rattled and wasnt very loud out side but open up the door and damn it was loud. One of the best systems I ever built, 2 Kicker 12"s, Legacy 1200w amp and all 6 speakers were upgraded and pushed by a 2nd amp with a pioneer head unit.

Subwoofers are not really directional unless they have some kind of midbass, in which case you would want 2 of them for stereo. People usually face away from them because there is a smaller amount of air volume for the subwoofer to displace so that it "hits" harder. Subwoofers are more about changes in pressure than they are about directional sound, as our ears can't discern the position of low frequencies well.

Is that a sealed or a ported bass tube? I wouldn't worry too much about placement, where did you place the amplifier (or is it self amplified?)

the amp is going to go in the passenger storage bin, or above it underneath the carpet and such if there's enough of a gap. I like minimal looking builds.

It's a ported box, it was self amplified but then it decided to blow the previous sub and itself when it was in my truck. i just recently bought the sub that's in it now, and the amp will be here in a day or so.

I was doing some research and came up with the answer that it really depends on the person and the vehicle as to where you get the best sound, so I'll experiment. If it's going to be facing the rear, I'll center it in the trunkspace with the rear of the sub between the two seats. when i tested it in the Lumina it felt kind of directional, but then again it was in the trunk behind a seat.

Are you replacing the amp with the same one from the manufacturer? Is that a bazooka branded sub? Just curious to know how you changed stuff. Ported boxes rarely make any difference when you point the port in different directions (unless you move some real big air with them.)

I've seen a 6.5 Bazooka tube hidden under the bins, carpet and all.
It sounded excellent, full and rich. Plus, completely hidden. Try it out.

Sounds great, as the hatch amplifies the bass really well..

Its some no name tube that had a really tiny self amp in it. I'm using an aftermarket vr3 amp, i used to have one hooked to it before the old sub blew - i didn't know it was self amplified, as i got it from work. It was a good setup for it's size and filled the cab of my old pickup with excellent sound, which is why I'm using it here.

I don't think there's enough room to mount the sub underneath the storage bins, at least not in the tube i have...but I'll see.

Subs sound better pointing away because the sound wave is so much longer at lower frequencies that having it go X distance bounce and then come back gives it more time for the wave to complete. This usually works in vehicles with a standard trunk also. Having it too far away from the "bounce point" can have negative effect just like having it too close.

I'm going to tackle the sub mount tomorrow, going to attempt to put it under the storage bin first. how in depth is the removal of the bin? I don't really want to have to demolish the interior to get to it, i just need to remove the carpet around it and the rest should be self explanatory?

I figured it was, and I planned on taking pics. The reason I asked about the carpet is because i know if i peel it back some, I'll go into cleaning mode first, and spend to much time doing that, lol. i can only imagine it's fairly cruddy underneath it.

Welp, got everything almost completely installed, it was raining like hell so i didn't get the power cable installed and routed. there's no possible way the sub will fit under the storage bins unless i remove a bin, so it'll end up going in the original place, above the passenger storage bin. also, totally didn't even notice the screws on the bin until i started to remove it. i was completely expecting to have to remove carpet to get it out.

I didn't take pictures of the wire routing, because honestly, who really wants to see pics of the center console out? that's where i ran the RCA cable and remote wire, not really rocket science......

Some tools and misc junk in there so you can get an idea of how much room i still have. the RCA cables will fit and will be routed along the side and out in the same fashion as the other wires.

the finished product! next on the list is to fix the hinge for that door so i can lock it! (I'm holding it in place, it's not connected)
