Steering wheel hub adapters and quick releases?
 

I plan on picking up a flat bottom steering wheel for a lil added leg room. I plan on getting a non-dished steering wheel, does anybody have any recommendations on what hub adapters to use. I don't really want to push the steering wheel out much further than needed. Maybe any pics?

Wouldn't mind a quick release also, but don't have to have one. I could've sworn to seen somewhere that a 2nd gen one will work on a 1st gen. Anyone know?

Anyone use an NRG hub?

they should work from a 2nd gen to a 1st gen ive seen the steering wheels swapped over both ways so id imagine they would work as well. i have one on my RX-2 and its very annoying to get on and off... i just leave it on since i bought the car that way.

im 6',5" and i manage by removing the "perch" that the seat bolts down to and bolting it to the floor farther back. and i didnt have to move the steering wheel at all. but i would imagine putting a spacer for the stock steering wheel would produce the same results. thus it looks stock and is closer so no more knee bumping. but thats just my opinion

You can also raise your steering wheel by using some spacers between the steering shaft and the "saddle" that holds it to the bottom of the dash. I did this and was surprized by how much it actually moved the wheel up. My seat sits high and before I couldnt see the turn signal indicators, but this simple modification completly solved the problem.

I don't have to have a quick release, just a theft deterrent if I'm gone for a while. I'm updating the interior, putting some new seats in, so I figured a new wheel also and create some room while I'm at it. I plan on getting the seat adapters that bolt straight to the floor with no slider.

Do you have any pics of what you did? Track days suck, not much room with a helmet on.

i have them somewhere. no need for an adapter just cut off the pedestals with a saw. then bolted the stock rails to the floor, the end. took not even 20 minutes.

but the seat started to hit the bins so i took them out and laid them flat like in a 2nd gen instead of forward and angled.

ill look for some more pictures or ill take some,

I'd go with a Momo/Sparco/OMP any good 6 bolt wheel and a Momo hub for a good selection of quick releases.

I used an LTB quick release on one of my race cars and LOVED it, definitely plan on using that quick release again, BUT, it does push the wheel back quite a bit. Good for me, not good for everyone.

NRG makes a slim quick release I believe.

So its come time to get at least a new drivers side seat, and I think Im gonna get this.

I actually looked into this and I've been told that the spline is the same for any RX-7, 1st gen to 3rd gen. I'm not 100% positive on this but I know I can use the FC TII steering wheel in the FB so I think it's true.

NRG makes an awesome setup for the 7's with a hub adapter and short quick release that's very high quality and highly regarded. I just bought an eBay steering wheel, cheap Chinese quick release and hub adapter for like $58 and will use those for a while until I save up for a nicer setup. I wanted the quick release as a theft-deterrent as well.

I'm guessing something like this would work?

I wouldnt go with any of the Ebay "no names" for a wheel. For safety, just get a good one. Ive been eyeing the NRG ones when my time comes.

the 1st gen hub is the same as the early miata hub, the FC hub has the same splines, but the distance to the turn signal cancel thing is different, so it goes on, but you loose the self cancelling turn signals.

I have the NRG slim hub and old style (without the wings) quick release. I love the set up. I have had it for about a year now and still looks awesome.

I also have a Grip Royal steering wheel, really good for the price. I had a white painted wheel but since I have the quick release it liked to chip, so I swapped it for one of their black leather wheels which I really like.

I'm curious; how does a flat-bottom wheel "add legroom" - unless you plan on only driving in straight lines?

With our low-rate steering gear ratios, most corners & curves will put that flat 'bottom' to one side or the other of the wheel much of the time.

You can go smaller diameter; you'll just have to work a bit harder.
