Something’s Cooking on Bring a Trailer

No car is perfect: the one in question is a bit weak for colour. But otherwise, at 4K miles, it is a pretty cool find.

I suspect the current high bid takes it since, with 6 days left to go, it currently sits at...

$30,000!!!!

Check it out on Bring a Trailer

Link would help:

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1983-mazda-rx-7-32/

So this is what a 'new' 1st Gen RX7 will cost ;)
This bid will either close the door on more bidding - right out of the gate - or...how crazy could this get?
This is getting to nice FD country...
Thanks-

Yeah, didn’t post a link since I wasn’t sure if that violated some sort of forum rule, and I was too lazy to search to find that out. I figured y’all would be smart enough to find it on BaT.

Stu I gotta thank you since I stole the basic format for my driving video from the one you created for your BaT sale. Didn’t end up needing the video since the car sold locally, but it was fun to make nonetheless :). I was working on stealing your basic walkaround format when the car sold: one of the deciding factors was all my footage sucked, so I took the local guy’s offer

i really have grown to like that brown color, its not a sports car color, but it looks really good. not sold on the tan interior though

Very Kind Pat :)
Was a BLAST to make for a RotorBro, and made great friends with the Buy as well. And you at least have a pretty cool memory of your old RX.
For the Crew: here is what Pat is referring too -
Part of a BaT sales last year for a beautiful, completely original SA. I think it is still the top valued SA sold on BaT ($17K)....

Lol! You know what? There is a bit of a discussion going on on BaT about the colour, and to be totally honest: I think I am sold on it! Not literally, of course: I am out of the pristine RX7 game, having neither the means nor the space to support such a thing. But in a few short hours, the colour has quite grown on me. I like the interior too!

Thanks Stu.

Your listing (and more accurately, it’s result) taught me that if you want top $$ for any vehicle on BaT, you had better have your ducks in a row: and you certainly did! Not being in the video business I had to get my ideas from somewhere, and yours were it. I now somewhat regret not going to BaT, but being in Canada and with the whole stupid COVID thing going on, I figured “a bird in the hand...” Pretty sure I could have made thousands more had I gone there, but oh well. The guy who bought it will probably try and list it there next year, so he can take the risk and I’ll get to see what it brings. Heavy sigh... lol.

I knew you'd come around!

It's just so very 80's that it grows on you. :P

That's a great video. Some real Tarantino/spaghetti western vibes from the jump zooms, and the soundtrack is spot on.

Where’s the love for my video?? :dunno:

Toruki 10-31-20 10:08 AM

Ha! Just put a nice Havana Brown FB in a shot or two. Seriously though, that's a super nice low mileage example.

Too kind! (I do this for a Living so gives me a bit of a leg-up...)
Apologies tho, not intended to Jack the Thread ;p

So let's keep our eye on the BaT auction-

Holy *(&*^% yes! I have that exact car, but with 32K additional miles. Little did I understand that each mile cost me another $1.50 :P

I don’t understand how (as a community) many of us lament how our RX-7s lag so far behind 240Z values (as an example... or pick any comparable milestone Asian car, if there is one), and yet when one goes for this much dough, some folks speak like it’s crazy it went that high, heads-a-shakin’. There should be nothing but love for this, in my opinion.

By the way, I’m not saying there is anyone shaking their heads in this thread, lol, just that I sometimes feel like we as an RX7 community have a bit of an inferiority complex. It’s like the Lotus guys: want their cars to be worth way more... ‘til it comes to buying one. Then what they are trying to buy is “overpriced”.

Anyway, I think I’ve messed up this opinion enough

Richard Miller 11-05-20 05:36 PM

don't get me wrong. I'm in awe but this made my day. I know my "retro-mod" will never snag this level of a premium. But it is well documented and as John Hammond would say "We spared no expense" . I do not plan to sell, but I know that things happen. What this does is validate classic japanese cars as a legitimate collectable.

Natey 11-05-20 05:42 PM

I bought my FD for 6 grand. It passed smog the next day.

i think i get it, these cars were way undervalued for so long, but now i couldn't afford to buy the ones i have!

its actually a little odd to me how cool these cars are now with normal people. i remember when i got my Tr3, i had been driving Rx7's in obscurity for a decade or so, and then the Tr3 was nuts, people would take pictures and hang out the window and yell things about how their uncle had one, and this one time i pulled up to a stop sign, and the high school kid in the car in front got out and hopped in with me an rode a block, crazy stuff.

and now the Rx7 is getting like this, and its odd to me. it is good, and its fun, its just odd

7aull 11-06-20 10:42 PM

Just to cap this off so folks know what all the hand-wringing is all about: it sold for $45,000.
Yes THREE Zeros. Not a typo. Basically, what a nice SA/FB will be going for in, say, 2025-ish.
Believe the new owner, a collector, plans to park it with the miles on it...

I sold my 32000 mile Limited Edition SA on BAT in 2016 for $5850. Granted it was far from this nice but it was very close to original. I’m happy to see our cars starting to increase in value.
To bad I turn my other low vin SA in to a solo/track car 20 years ago. But I built it to have fun with it and I do get a lot of nice comment when I do bring it out to the track from people that either had one or want one.

Correction, $45,500.00

mazdaverx713b 11-08-20 09:08 AM

Thats insane!! But it goes to show you that our cars are still coveted when in their original condition with low miles. Makes me regret selling off a few low mileage examples 10 plus years ago.

you make a great point, and i just wanted to acknowledge and support it.

i'm guilty of it, and that shouldn't be. more and more, these days, i'm seeing all these cars in pristine condition and/or ridiculously low mileage, and sellers asking prices commensurate with what they have, and my first thought is the price is in insane. meanwhile, i won't even look at a 240Z (for fear of a TIA or full-blown stroke), and i find myself justifying the prices on 260s and 280s (moreso 280s since i rarely see 260s) even in shitty conditions simple because they are 70s Z-cars. so, speaking for myself, i think there may be something to this "inferiority complex". i need to change. :)

distr0 11-08-20 10:57 AM

As someone who doesn't always love the look of 1st gens... that is an absolute perfect color combo for that car.

Frogman 11-10-20 02:54 AM

My car has 130k miles and i paid 2,400$ in 2016, good luck finding a car that clean for under 6k in so cal now. We are all ready to see a slow uptick in third party parts by techno toy tuning, rotary engineering, and a few other small startups.

lwrobins 11-10-20 08:03 AM

I.ve heard rotary guys/gals are of a different breed than other car enthusiasts. Little more hard core!

pronkie1 11-10-20 10:00 AM

And it still had the original tires on it........I tried listing a 83 GSL with 36k and automatic , all original and BAT wanted to list it with no reserve...I said no thanks....I did list a 71 Ford Ranchero GT clone earlier this year but reserve was not met....

I know this is a massively unpopular opinion, but an auto first-gen should cost double what a manual does simply due to rarity ( less than 10% were autos ) and the fact it makes it immediately more accessible to everyone. My Mach 1 is a stick shift and as much as is like banging gears, I live in So cal, and driving a stick here is bullshit . Mind you that jatco trans is nearly indestructible as I have run me with low ATF oil and after my rebuild and new gaskets ensuring the leaks stopped it shifts like a new car and it has 120 k on it.

7aull 11-17-20 07:58 AM

"I know this is a massively unpopular opinion..."
:D
Exactly. THATs why the manuals command the Coin. In most any breed of sports car for sale.

" all original and BAT wanted to list it with no reserve"
-yeah, deal breaker for a lot of sellers. And what is annoying is it seems arbitrary! I HAVE seen 1st Gen RX7 WITH a reserve on BaT. No logic. But if you want on one of the worlds most popular car auction sites..."
;P
