I dont have pics of it in the car..but here is the shifter I installed around the end of the year. I went MOMO...shifter and wheel with an NRG quick release hub. Best security if you ask me...

Ray, the second shot - - the color and texture looks remarkably like the dried apricots I'm eating right now... (lol)
I still haven't found a stock 1st-gen knob in decent enough shape, for my car. Still looking, too. I upgraded to a later-gen knob that's much nicer than the (shudder) Honda knob I had for decades. Funny thing; the newer knob is so heavy in comparison that I missed 3rd the first half-dozen shifts, & ended up going 2nd to 5th due to knob inertia. Dur. |
Heres some pics of my original 80 SA GS interior with the original knob (plastic not leather).

Using a honda knob. Looks JUST like the stock S2 knob, but the reverse has a circle around it and the threading is higher up in the knob, making it look like a short shifter.

Can you post up a good pic of a plastic knob? I don't believe I've ever had a good look to see the difference to a wraped one. This is noggin tapping "hard" plastic?
stitches. I'll see if I can get a better detail shot up later. From a couple of feet away its very hard to tell the differences really. In the second shot you can just see the molded stitches facing you. |
Oh, I think I understand. No, I don't believe I've ever grabbed one of those.

Knob from my mom's old 1980's Corolla.
http://i457.photobucket.com/albums/q...l/100_0551.jpg I decided to go with the RA 121 http://i457.photobucket.com/albums/q...ll/ra121-1.jpg Based on this guys review. I've gone through quite a few shift knobs myself since getting my NC2 in October, but I will say my two favorites are the Voodoo Pearl Magnum and the Razo RA121 which I'm currently using. Not sure if you're looking to get a different knob just for looks, but I was searching specifically to improve shifter feel. If you get an all metal knob, expect to feel the synchronizers MUCH more...it will feel notchy and metallic. The Mazda knobs are all quite heavy and all have a resin core to them and as such, will dampen the notchiness of the NC gearbox...which I think was a deliberate move by Mazda exactly for this reason. I find the Mazda knobs simply way too tall however. For me, I liked the Voodoo, but the Razo RA121 is like a Voodoo on steroids and only costs about $10 more. It's got the same overall shape and feel in the hand but is almost twice as heavy at 300 grams and sits even lower than the Voodoo. Forget about needing any short shifter kit with this knob, this knob alone makes shifts short, precise, and very quick, especially noticeable when going for 5th gear. Its claim to fame is that the top of the shifter shaft sits about 2mm below the absolute top of the knob, and it's true. Once I got use the the Razo, the Voodoo actually felt too tall for me, unbelievable as that may sound. I love how the knob just perfectly lines right up with my hand when I rest my arm on the center console...I don't have to cock or lift my wrist upward which I had to with the Voodoo. It makes flicking from gear to gear so much fun when your knob is RIGHT THERE in the palm of your hand at all times. You can check this thread for some really good pics of it which is what convinced me to buy one. http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?p=4295439 And this photo. http://i457.photobucket.com/albums/q...hill/ra121.jpg But sadly won't be able to drive with it until the summer. |
These will all fit the shaft, but none of them feel exactly right. Damn I am picky.

Rx8 shift knob, it says 6 speed but I got it for free so it doesnt bother me. Fit is perfect, and man does it feel awesome. The weight is perfect and 1000x better then the stock one I had.

I kind of like John's Corolla knob, it has a lot of character for a non-stock item!

Ah, much better pictures now. Here is the honda knob:
http://i49.tinypic.com/168u2ps.jpg Honda on left, stock on right: http://i46.tinypic.com/mcsn41.jpg In the first picture you can see a crease in the shifter boot of where it originally was stock, and now the new "crease" is about 1/2 inch lower. |
|
Thanks Ray, I like it too and would be happy to keep it. But it has never fit exactly right and now it has become just too floppy. It really does fit the character and era of the car.
It also has a bit of nostalgia value as it came from the car in which I learned to drive a stick. |
