SA 4 speed to SE 5 speed swap?
Hey Everyone,
I tried searching for this but all I could were 12a 5 speed to 13b 5 speed swap threads. I've got a 1980 SA base "S" model 12A 4 speed car. A GSL SE 5 speed popped up locally and I'm wondering if it's worth it to do this swap? I'm assuming I would need the SE rear end to make this work right? Also, would the shift linkage and all that swap right over on this or would I have to find all SE parts to make it work? The main appeal of this is having an LSD once I source a rear end but also better cruising top gear I would think. Let me know if anyone's tried this before. |
There are lots of threads on swapping trans into a 1979/1980 body.
You do not need the rear end. |
Also the shifter is position a couple inches further back with the SE tranny.

Doesn't seem like it's worth it without the rear end to go with it. Especially if I end up going with a T2 swap, I'll probably want a T2 trans.

Having all the information helps with our answers. Thanks for the new info. If you go with any trans after 1980, the shifter location will need to be modified if you don't want to cut the trans tunnel. What you decide on rearend will be up to your desires.
Would the stock SA driveshaft still work? |

Also, if I think correctly, going from SA to TII trans, you will need 225mm clutch/flywheel and I believe starter?
Would the stock SA driveshaft still work? the trannys is the same. You have to use the yoke from the SA as well then. I just thought about it some more and it will only work if the splines are the same for the yokes otherwise the shaft may not bold up. The links kansas gave you should help answers these things. |
