and any " CHEATS " i can apply?

If i said

- it was a gift

- it was free

- it was sitting in the sun for 8 years

- original owner passed away

PLEASE LMK!!! THANK YOU!

Why dont you just go down to the DMV and find out. The easiest way to find out how much its going to cost is to ask to have it registered. If it has all the stock smog equipment such as the catalytic converter and all them little vacuum lines and stuff it should pass smog. If not, ur gonna have to cheat...

Mr.Chewbacca 03-31-08 03:35 AM

thank you i will do it tomorrow
any paper work need?

MattG 03-31-08 04:01 AM

I bought my pinto from a dead guy and the car hadnt been legal since the 80's.

Cost me a 100 bucks, with tax and all that jazz.

There isnt any fines for not registering the car.

wow

warwickben 03-31-08 05:27 AM

make a bill of sales and date them both within 7 days of when youll go to the dmv. sales tax is blue book on the car. say its a roller so they will make you pay the least amount. me and my buddy had a car for a year befor we went and got the title.

bliffle 03-31-08 06:18 AM

I didn't have any problem when I did that. The guy at the CA DMV was very helpful and he used a "low value car transfer" to facilitate things. Cost me less than $100.

Vehicle Registration is not a load, it's doesn't f*ck you if you don't pay it. You'll just have to pay all the fees to make the vehicle current again, but you won't have to pay for the previous years.

Vashner 03-31-08 10:46 AM

I dont' get it. You don't have to pay past registrations..
At least not in Texas.

Also how much did you pay for it? Sales tax can't be that high that you want a quote "cheat".

83rx7boy92 03-31-08 02:28 PM

you shouldent have a problem, when i got my car last year it hadnt been registered since 92 i just went into the dmv paid the fees and was on my way...cost less then 120 bucks

82transam 03-31-08 02:38 PM

As the others have said, unless CA has crazy laws about registration you should just have to pay to have it registered, I can't believe they would charge you a fine because some previous owner let it sit...

warwickben 03-31-08 03:12 PM

i dont know if its the same in ca. but in mass you need to bring the titled singed and dated and a bill of sales.to get a new title in your name. you have seven day's from the time you buy the car to get the title in your name. i dont know what happens if you go over the seven day's tho.

bill of sales in mass you need the vin # make and model, miles on the car. then you need it to be singed and written the seller and buyers names and it needs to be dated.

if you need a bill of sales and dont have one or its dated when you bought the car and you waited to long is where you will run in to trouble. if you need a bill of sales make sure you you can fake the person's writing or your fucked. if you can get a hold of the person you bought it from just call them up and make a new bill of sales.

me and my buddy bought a car and waited a year to get the title. i worked with the guy so he just didnt date them. also make sure every thing is in the same color of ink.

Mr.Chewbacca 03-31-08 04:30 PM

thanks guys very helpful, onother Question , how do i make a bill of sales?

djessence 03-31-08 05:04 PM

Well you can go to various websites and print one off but here in canada a peice of paper written and signed by both parties with a witness is fine.

So you Say I (seller) sell my (yr make model vin) to (buyer) for $(amount) on this day, as is, where is.

Signed (buyer, seller, witness) and have a copy made for the seller.

Or i think even a signed pink slip might be good enough but that i dont know

This is for canada though. And you live in cali so itll need to be smogged no matter what wont it? And for here anyways you just need to pay to register your vehilce and get a plate for it (which is like 80 bucks) no matter if it hasnt been driven in 10 years or if its brand new.

neofreak 03-31-08 05:09 PM

I had to pay $1300 in back registration on my when I bought it.

warwickben 03-31-08 05:21 PM

in mass , should be the same in other states.
this is against the law by the way but a cop i know told me to do this, i set my bill of sale on fire by mistake :wallbash: this is like bang me in the ass fed jail stuff tho, but its safe. if the car and title are not stolen

have it look like this all hand printed.
.................................................. .................................................. ..............................
insert date

I insert name am selling my 1980 mazda rx7, vin# , miles on odometer, to
insert person buying car name for the sum of i300$ see below about this on insert date as is.

seller named singed
hand printed

buyer singed
hand printed
.................................................. .................................................. ................................

the reason i said 300$ use a low ball number and tell the person that its cheap because it need to be rebuilt ect ie why "as is" is at the end.
that way you will pay the cheapest sales tax on the worth of the car.
when i went to get the title put in my name the guy was figuring out the sales tax. since i didnt have it insured yet, so no value for him to base my tax on. he had to look at blue book.they have to use the highest value ie mint, it was 3000$ i paid 1500 for the car tho. its what ever one is more what you paid vs hight blue book number.
then he saw color, i put down flat black and miles i put down 300k+ which is true for my car:) he said i take it your restoring it. so he had me pay the sales tax for a
poor quality blue book value. i think i paid 25$ sales tax and 50 for the new title in my name.

you mite need a witness i used one just incase.

warwickben 03-31-08 05:26 PM

neo freak how why would you have to pay that you didnt owe it:scratch: unless you had to pay the compy to get the car. because the guy sold it befor they could repro it. or some thing:scratch:

Can't buy it if registration is due.

warwickben 03-31-08 05:42 PM

my capri sat for oven ten years paid sales tax on 1000$ and 50 for title.

i dont get why you would have to pay a fee to have plate on a car for all the years it didnt have one till you bought it?

djessence 03-31-08 05:49 PM

Man that sucks in the states then. Ive had a couple cars sit for a couple years here and all i had to do was get a safety for insurance, insure it, and then register it.

Clearly a different/weird system (is it designed to discourage old abandoned cars from being fixed?)

IanS 03-31-08 06:48 PM

In Iowa, it maxes out at 3 years of registrations you need to pay.

Vashner 03-31-08 08:43 PM

That makes zero sense. It punishes the buyer for what reason???

How can they get away with that?

djessence 03-31-08 08:49 PM

Discourages vehicles that are older and probably in worse condition.

Alot of California guys contributing to this thread, one of the states with the most strict emissions testing. Soooo, I can kinda see where they are coming from.

But it does suck

Mr.Chewbacca 04-01-08 01:56 PM

thank you all for your advice and stories!

i will comment back when i get the total bill :D

82transam 04-01-08 02:18 PM

So on top of the rediculous emissions laws CA makes you pay for something the previous owner did? Damn I thought NJ was bad, but that just sucks.... remind me never to move out there...
