Rear Seat Removal 1984 GSL
 

Sorry if there's already a thread on this, couldn't find one.

Does anyone know how to properly remove the rear seats from an FB? I've got a 1984 GSL that has the rear seat installed - no idea if they were dealer optioned (or if that was even a thing in the US) or aftermarket, but I need them out to reach the fuel pump wires, finally replace all the carpeting, and hopefully get them reupholstered and installed.

Seat folds forward just fine, detached its little mounting piece that secures the cargo carpet to it, but for the life of me I can't figure out where it actually bolts in to the car.

I can get some pictures if that would help, but this poor girl was sitting in the Texas sun for 21 years before I got her, so it's going to look accordingly horrific. I keep a tally of every critter skull I find in it; you've been warned.

lower part just pulls up... there may be 2 bolts under the upper part..

If I remember correctly there were 2 bolts on the bottom front and another 2 on the bottom back. I bagged my seats for storage but if you don't figure it out I'll pull it out and snap some pictures for you. Let me know.

I have the same question. My 1984 GS has the rear seat. I don't see how to fold it down or remove it. There is a small chrome handle in the center at the bottom front of the seat. Is this used to fold the seat or remove it? The handle moves in and out, but doesn't release anything.

Hey so my bad for never updating on this, but I did get my rear seat out successfully. In my case, it seems like it must have been a custom job, so may be different from your GS.

As everyone mentioned, there were the two large nuts on bolts under the front of the seat (have to remove that portion of the carpet, and access through the openings in the body under the seat), which I believe were 19mm (use a deep socket). But then in my case, there were also bolts going from brackets attached to the sides of the seat and out through the body of the car, so that the nuts for those are accessible through the rear wheel wells. Seems like those holes were just drilled by whatever shop did the job, it was honestly pretty sloppy, and I believe on cars where it's stock there's some kind of fitting for it built into the frame. Then besides the rear cargo carpet that was attached to the back of the seats, that was it.

I am going purely off memory for this, but the side attachments are definitely what caught me off guard when dealing with mine. I can take pictures some time if you think yours may be similar and need some input, but once you find all the attachment points it's dead simple.

The bolts going thru brackets to outside of car...all SA and FB cars have a threaded collar welded to upper rear link reinforcing plate. This is what the side bolts go into. I don’t know what your seat looks like,suspect it is an original seat. All the factory seats bolt into the side plates. In this country as these cars came here as a two seater,the threaded collars on reinforcing plates had a rubber plug installed to close off the opening to inside of car to keep weather out.

Are you saying other holes were drilled in side of car and original threaded mounting point was not used?

Must be my own misinformation, then - I'd read somewhere that there were two different variants, with and without the factory threaded holes, and the setup on mine just seemed so off when I was taking it apart that I assumed it to be an aftermarket job. But then maybe that was just a fact of the car being so aged and all the hardware so worn, and I had been misinformed by whatever thread I found that tidbit on. I can't say anything definitive about it really, that's just what I'd observed on mine. Seems like false information runs rampant on these and I'd hate to be propagating it further.

No worries,here's a pic on a recent repair i did. You can clearly see the threaded collar welded into upper link reinforcement plate on lower right. Rubber plug has not yet been reinstalled,waited til after all welding done. Laying on floor in car,can put up a pic if you need to see what it looks like.
