Rare JDM & Aus delivered 1st gen RX-7 brochures & road tests
 

Hi guys

I've been going through my collection of RX-7 memorabilia and, since a lot of this stuff is rare and not possible for other to view online let alone obtain, I've started posting up scans to share. I thought I'd share here too. I know there are scanned of all the US brochures and road tests freely available on the Internet, but the following material I don't believe is available anywhere else.

Here's some of the stuff I've added already, but there is more to come...

1984/85 Savanna RX-7 JDM Options & Accessories brochure - AusRotary - this shows the factory options & accessories that were available in the JDM, as well Europe and Australia.

1st gen RX-7 OEM accessories brochure - AusRotary - this is another version, which I don't personally own but managed to get excerpts from. Some of the cooler items include a rear parking sensor!

For whatever reason, Mazda US did its own accessories/options, which were sourced independently from Mazda and promoted under the "Finish Line" brand. Things like the Targa top, louvres, mudflaps etc were basically aftermarket accessories available in the US only. After a bit of hunting, I have scored a set of the OEM moulded mudflaps with the RX7 logo. They look great fitted.

1985 Savanna RX-7 GT / GT Turbo "The IMSA Special" JDM brochure - AusRotary - this was a limited edition model sold in Japan only and available in Canal Blue - a colour which no other 1st gen RX-7 was ever offered in anywhere in the world.

Yeah we missed out on a LOT of neat OE accessories due to MazdaUSAs "we can make 'em here. Cheaper." philosophy. Although it did result in a few unique-to-N.America items like rear louvers. And the Glass roof panels.
There is a JDM-only accessories brochure series as well, that I have seen photos of but not yet scored for my Literature collection.
Nice catch of the OE Mudguards. Unobtainium!

Not sure I can get quite as excited as you about the "Parking Sensor" tho. Looks like a vertical stick you mount on the bumper. Not too much Tech in that. Or how "cool" an RX would look like with the presumed mounting of one on all 4 corners?? More like Parking-Training-Wheels.

The Targa top, car bra and red RX7 logo taillight centre garnish are all very cool US only items. The US glass moon roof is also highly sought after here in Australia.

I've actually 2 different styles of OE mudflaps: one set with the outline RX-7 logo which were on 81-85 models and one set with the RX-7 in italics, like the badge that's on the front guards (fenders) which were only on 84-85 models.

I had a chance to pick up some of the OE door visors from Yahoo Auctions Japan. They are just stainless steel panels/mouldings that clip onto the drip rails and were painted the same colour black as the windscreen mouldings. In the end, they cost too much and I wasn't convinced they look good so I didn't bid.

Both of the accessories brochures I have scans for are JDM only - most of these accessories were definitely available in Japan only. If you are aware of another brochure besides these 2, then I need to get my hands on it! From the JDM brochures, the things I've seen in Australia that I know were available through dealerships here were the rubber rear spoiler, the moulded RX7 mudflaps, the roof rack and a rear luggage rack. European cars had the option of the 13" rotor wheels, but I've seen them in the US too. Aus didn't get them.

Other parts are aftermarket and were just sold through Mazda, like the Cibie fog lamps. It isn't too hard to find NOS Cibie lamps from the 1980s which are rated the same and have the same covers as the ones Mazda sold. They come up on eBay from Europe all the time.

This thread is pure gold, thanks for sharing all of these! I would love to see them scanned on a high quality scanner with a high DPI so they can be blown up and made into posters. Would be so cool to make some of them into high resolution vintage-retro posters for the garage :rolleyes:

I do want to do some high DPI scans (and have my whole ausrotary.com dedicated server to host them), but its a bit tricky as they have a funny page size and are actual booklets. I may need to go into a print shop to get it done. The original printing isn't flash hot either - same sort of resolution as any old magazine from the early 80s.

Any I have attempted to print "up" to a nice size (11x14, say) I have had to run thru photoshop to clean up first, either to remove stray pixels in the printing process of that time, or just age-related damage to the item I am printing. I carefully pull the staples and scan each page, with some larger (like the so-called 'Honkata' over-sized JDM brochures) ones getting scanned in sections and re-joined in Photoshop. Tedious!
