Power limit GSL-SE Diff
Ok, its a s3 rx7, last dyno-ed at 436rwhp (13b turbo) Running stock s3 diff with Guru torsen, starting to make noises, i suspect the (fairly new) bearings and possibly the gears.
Ive taken it to a diff specialist, my options are; 1) Build the existing diff with billet axles, replace collapsible sleeve with a pinion spacer, and box in or gusset the housing - $2500 2) Build a borg warner diff (dont ask me the designation lol all i know is its form a vl commodore) with a clutch lsd or a locker. $3000 3) Build a Hilux diff with an eaton truetrac $4000 Monetary values are australian and fairly competetive, both options 2 and 3 are fairly well proven to take a bit of horsepower, but option 1 is my favorite if anyone can convince me it will be able to take a hard launch on 225 wide r-compound tyres? I have actually been running the s3 diff with the turbo engine for years and it does get noisey after a while but has never let go. But the +400hp thing is fairly recent. No one has ever managed to pop a Guru Torsen as far as I'm aware so can probably rule that out as a weak point. All help and insight appreciated. |
You should check with bad_83, as I know he has run high HP turboed rotaries and been through some
diff issues. I bet he can tell you some things about weak points in the rearends. |
Thanks Mr Farrell, I sent him a PM.
Open to all opinions on this. The diff builder says the billet axles will be good for silly hp, and the gears will be fine once a pinion spacer is installed. My theory is the housing and tube flex is chewing out bearings so would like to strengthen that. But I'm having a hard time believing the stock gears will be good at 5 or 6 times the power they were designed for for a long time. That said the diff in its current configuration lasted pretty well with 330hp behind it. Never broke an axle, did have it rebuilt a couple times over the years - once for a chipped tooth in the ring gear due to bad adjustment, once due to chewed out axle bearings, which was fairly recent. The new bearings didnt last very long btw. |
