Well, you can see by my post count that I'm a new member...until you see that I've been a member since 2002. Haha. Until this morning I had 1. I had to go do the new members stuff to post in here.

Obviously I don't post often. The fact that I registered 7 years ago might also be a clue that I've had respect and interest in getting an rx-7 for quite some time.

My history:
I've owned almost exclusively Celicas in my 12 years of car ownership. I've gone the range from my first Celica being a 1986 with 97 horsepower, to a few alltracs (for those that don't know, they are turbo and all-wheel drive) to my current Celica, the VVTL-i GT-S. My rear-wheel drive cars have been a 1987 Toyota Corolla GT-S, and a 1991 Toyota MR-2. Obviously I'm a Toyota guy...but I'm open to all good cars.

Where I am:
Well, my current car is the most expensive I've owned. I'm pretty fresh out of college, and the student loans are pouring in. I've decided to sell it and get something cheaper. I was planning on getting an old Celica like my first car, but they're very hard to find not rusted to pieces. I also have been wanting a RWD car.

It popped back into my head yesterday that an rx-7 could be nice. A quick look on craigslist found me a non-rusted (but also non-running) 85 just 30 minutes away.

I don't have much info on it at the moment. Just that there is supposedly no rust, and that they were told it doesn't run and have never tried to start it. It is $450. Hopefully it's nothing major, but I'll assume it may need rebuilt, or other involved work.

That's it I guess. I may go see the car today if the owner has time. We'll see how it goes I guess.

i say go for it. these cars tend to be pretty reliable fun cars. you'll save money in almost everything. well, except for gas. though a lot of people are getting around 28 mpg, i personally average about 15

most no start problems can be solved easily. unless its a bad motor which happens less often. even if its a stuck apex seal you can sometimes un-stick them. make sure to check under the bins/ rear tire wells. that is the most common place for rust.

i say check it out asap :) and buy it. especially if the interior is not red/maroon

My first 2 cars were Corolla SR5s, but once my best friend spanked me in his RX3 Coupe, I was a convert ;)
As far as non-running RX7s go, the two versions of that story end either with you 'stealing' the car and getting it up and running fine because the owner cluelessly screwed up the fuel/ignition system somehow OR the damn motor is actually toast. But its a motor like any other (as far as what makes it go) and is easier to rebuild than most. These are the Last of the Great, Simple cars, so if your inclined to tinker, you'll enjoy the ease of it with an RX7.
If you get the car, let us know - we can all save you some angst and point you to what needs to be looked at and how to do it...
