The engine has been rebuilt or the carb has the rebuild?

jdmjuanito 01-13-17 12:09 AM

Can you, have you driven the car since you bought it? Start up easy? Idle smooth, about 800 rpm? Does it backfire/bog at low rpm, when driving the car once you reach higher rpm does it accelerate smoothly & have adequate power? Yes? Remove air cleaner lid(engine not running) and with choke pushed in look down into carburetor throat while an assistant smoothly pushes gas pedal to floor, once. You want to see a solid stream of fuel squirting into both primary venturies(smaller). If not, then have assistant pump pedal several times while you watch for any amount of fuel,dribble.. if nothing your accelerator pump may be not working the reason for backfire/bog. When you open the throttle on a running engine at low rpm the mixture goes lean initially, the accelerator pump injects a raw squirt of fuel to compensate for this and smoothly transitions the carburetor from its idle circuits to main fuel circuits. Without this accelerator pump shot you can have some of the symptoms you describe.. don't know what your skillset is,these are somewhat complex carburetors & someone's idea of rebuilding the carburetor may not meet the standards of a professional rebuild by someone knowledgable of rotary engine carburetors. Accelerator pump not working(if indeed this is the problem) could be due to improper assembly and or lack of thorough cleaning of the carburetor. Maybe place to start is contact previous owner/seller and inquire the reason for rebuilding carb in first place and further if that rebuilder will stand behind his work and make it right...post back answers to questions & we'll give you guidance on how to proceed. Lots of good & helpful people on this board that know these cars well.
