Our first 1st gen!

Today my dad picked up a 1984 GSL for $500. It is in really good shape for the price and we have not found one spot of rust yet. We got it to run while spraying starting fluid in the carb but it smokes alot and as soon as we stop spraying starting fluid it dies. We only tinkered with it for an hour or so but we are pulling the motor anyway in the future and probably putting in a 13b but not sure yet. As of right now we plan on building an autocross/ time attack car out of it and building the whole thing ourselves. I already own a 2nd gen so we are not new to the rotary game but this is our first 1st gen. We can not wait to start building it.

We were wondering if this car has an electric fuel pump and where is it located? We were also wondering if it has a fuel pump relay and where is it located?

rxtasy3 03-06-11 11:55 PM

excellent find. the fuel pump is electric and is located under the driver side, forward of the rear wheels. there's a metal cover covering it so it'll be hard to see right off. just look for the fuel lines. there is no relay that i'm aware of. for what ur planning on doing with it, if u end up deciding to strip the interior, PM me. depending on price, i could use some of the pieces as it's the same color as mine.

10yearrx7 03-07-11 12:14 AM

Ok cool thank you. In the future we do plan to completely strip the interior and possibly go with a nice sheet metal interior like you would see in a drag car, but it will be an autox car. I will let you know when we do.

BlackWorksInc 03-07-11 12:18 AM

I spy with my little eye a 2010 Tundra TRD!

Grats on the find, I got my first car as a 1982 first gen at the age of 15 and I loved that thing to death.

10yearrx7 03-07-11 12:35 AM

It will be a fun car that is for sure. What I am looking forward to is building it. It will be a really fun project and my dad and I are in no rush to get it done so it will get done properly. I was 15 when I discovered the rx7. My parents bought a 10ae and I did not know much about it but then my dad and I started doing some work to it and I started to learn more and now the car is mine and I know a fair amount about it and rotarys in general.

oh yeah i just noticed look in the front wheel on the truck... all you see is rotor. I think they are 14 or 15 inch rotors lol

you should pull the storage bins and check back there for rust if you haven't already.

+1

Mine looked rust free until I pulled the bins. it was only 2 spots, but one was part of a critical suspension link. It isnt that hard to repair if you have basic welding skills and a Mig. It could be easily done with a wire feed or stick too, I just dont like to use them.

very nice i was thinkin at looken at a auto first gen for a daily driver but i stuck to civics for daily drivers

RX-7 Chris 03-07-11 11:03 AM

nice car. I'm also in need of some interior parts that color.

Will do. It looks pretty solid so far. We are the 3rd owners and the owners before us had it for 13 years and it has been in California that whole time. So hopefully it won't have any rust.

Anyone know what the knob is by the canter counsil? It moves all around and has front, back, left, right labeled on it. It looks like it would be for the mirrors but the car has power mirrors and I have moved it all around and nothing happened.

Speaker fader if I am not mistaken.

It is for the speaker fade.

Today we figured out that the fuel pump is not working so we will need one of those. We also compression tested and the front and rear were pretty much the same but not great numbers. I don't remember exactly but they were somewhere around 70/80/80. Then we put a tiny bit of oil in the spark plug holes on the front rotor and saw higher numbers, but it was getting dark so we didn't do the rear rotor. We are really surprised because this car has sat for a couple years. Plus I cleaned it up a little. The driver side is really nice but the passenger side used to have a line of spray paint down the side and the previous owners used some kind of solvent to get it off and it ruined the paint.

dayum that's a good looking car

abtosway 03-07-11 11:08 PM

1st off, nice car! I like that the earth tones are back in style.

2nd, On the last picture there something stood out to me. I have a 1979 myself and im very confident that my lower control arm was 100% straight. Perhaps this is one of the few differences between the SA and the fb? If not, might be worth looking into!

10yearrx7 03-08-11 12:11 AM

Yeah the passenger one is straight. That is why I put this pic up was to show that. I'm still shocked we got it for $500

abtosway 03-08-11 12:45 AM

Whew I'm not losing my mind then :p Thats a fantastic deal for sure!

MountainScreamer 03-08-11 12:57 AM

Thats a great find!
Do you plan on driving it for a little bit or start digging into it immediately?

ty97206 03-08-11 01:24 AM

There is a fuel pump relay.. Its under than dash under the driver side. Its bolted right by the steering column its round and has i think 5 wires to it. Try jumpering it and see if that helps you out.... Mine went out about 6 months ago. Left it jumpered and put a inline fuze, have not have a problem yet.

Man_in_black49464 03-08-11 02:38 AM

well it hit a curb judging by the control arm.

Good luck with the auto i had one back in the day in it was SOOOOO slow

I know a guy buy me is looking for a auto trans because his foot is jacked up, so if you swap it out let me know.

j9fd3s 03-08-11 11:18 AM

color me crazy but i like that color, i rebuilt a gsl-se that color way back in the day....

if that was mine, i'd throw the manual trans in there, and just enjoy, 1st gens make great DD's

10yearrx7 03-08-11 08:37 PM

I like the color as well but the passenger side isn't quite as nice as the driver side. And a manual is in this cars future, I just don't know when.

We got the car running today! Put in a new fuel pump then found out that we had a clog on the hard lines that come out of the gas tank. We got it all cleaned out and it started up. It had a good amount of white smoke for a while but as it warmed up it went away. Sad part was the oil pressure is way low. Highest we could get it to go to while revving the car was maybe 50 lb/in2. I'm sure it needs a rebuild but we were on a mission to get it running. The things purrs like a kitten though, very smooth. And we got a straight link from the junkyard and installed it. A couple more pics soon

10yearrx7 03-08-11 09:33 PM

It is hard to hear but it is running here until we gave it gas then it would stall. Once it warmed up it revved freely though.
