Opinion on what to do with my RX-7?

OK, well I've had my RX-7 for a little over a week now. It's an 83 GSL, all-original, all-stock, with 229K miles. Just about everything in it works (1 power window switch is dead, and the temp gauge acts up, EVERYTHING else works perfect), and it's straight with minimal rust.

I've drag raced it and performed some basic maintenance items, and now that a good baseline has been set, it's time to determine what to do with it. My original intention is to make it an SCCA-legal autocross car, and work up the classes until it's nicely modified. Problem is, this car is showroom stock. Now I'm torn!

So what would you do? Stock restoration to preserve a classic and buy another 7 to race? Or go ahead and do whatever I want with it?

As for the options, it's a red metallic GSL with factory steel and glass sunroofs, red cloth interior (bleh), rear wiper (works!), power windows/mirrors, cruise (also works!), the kick-butt (for 1983) sound system (separate equalizer and separate fader knob, all working, with power antenna), and being a GSL it has the disc brake LSD rear and 13" 4-spokers.

I'd say make it a autox/road course racer. Not Drag IMO. My reasoning for that is these cars were meant for handling etc so i dont think they should be used strictly for going straight (again drag guys pls dont flame me i included IMO)

I just drag raced it to see what it would do, it's definitely not my drag project! I'm just torn between making it a nice weekend cruiser/corner carver or stock resto.

If it's clean and original, keep it that way. You can autocross it and appreciate the stock handling of the car. Post pictures!! LOL

buy another one!!! They are cheap and you can do whatever you want to it and not worry about it. They are easy to find with blown motors and do what I did and swap in your good running motor and restore the nice original one. Best of both worlds!!

Yea if it's showroom I would keep it that way. But you should do what makes you happy. In the end that's all that matters...

It's not showroom nice, just showroom original. It honestly wouldn't take much to "restore" it though. Paint, some interior work, and correct the few non-factory things under the hood (battery, plug wires, replace missing snorkel). Needs wheels though, mine are corroded.

Thanks for the opinions. I have pics floating around on here.

Some body work and repaint will really make it shine. This car like all the 1st gen's shows some character. Save it from the crusher 4 sure.
