A Newbie with NO questions......what a concept !!!

I just bought an 81 ITA rx7 gls-se in Mass. to bring to the great white north to road race, so I figured this was the site to be on.

You FAQ section is AWSOME, so unforunatley I won't be asking questions for a while. I just wanted to say "thanks" for the huge effort put into the FAQ section for people like me !! :icon_tup:

Congrats :) Welcome to the club. There are quite a few guys in the KW, London and the GTA. They gather once in a while, keep an eye on the Canadian Section.

Congrats and welcome to the club. Sure it's a 81 though, cause the GSL-SE were only made in 84 and 85. Looks nice!

ray green 08-11-08 05:38 PM

Yep we need some pictures and I don't believe that you don't have any questions, it will happen. Like, you need to be asking about those wheels:

But I like the color.

Where in Mass you going, I used to live in the Amherst area (not many 7's in PC'ville).

Welcome!

Ray

axle 08-11-08 11:07 PM

he has no questions yet because he hasn't picked up the car yet then he should have plenty of them

yellow_jacket 08-11-08 11:10 PM

Hahaha, I'm new here and already know most of what I need to.

That makes two of us with Yellow First Gens and already knowing what we have gotten ourselves into!

Hmm...no questions huh? Hate to break it to ya, but the -SE didn't start production 'til 1984. Plus, i've only seen those wheels in 4x110.

I'm just bustin your balls. Your car looks amazing, congrats on the find and the purchase.

FBsliderseven 08-12-08 04:40 AM

yea probably a gsl...
haha but thats one nice looking fb.

racerguy19 08-12-08 06:22 AM

Ok.....I was close, had 3 out of 5 letters right:scratch: ........it's a GSL.....no SE......it has rear disc and LSD.:icon_tup:

I like the colour and the wheels........I think I'll keep them both !! :bigthumb:

82transam 08-12-08 08:34 AM

Looks very good, welcome to the forum!

racerguy19 08-12-08 09:08 AM

I'm looking to make this a very fast car at the track. I currently race a '97 Camaro SS with an LT1 vette engine.....it's fast, but a brute. I really want to show them how a nice compact Mazda rotarty will kick thier ass !!!:hahaha:

Cheers !!

ray green 08-12-08 11:40 AM

Looks great racerguy, wheels and all. Welcome to the club!

Do you have any questions yet? Like maybe how do you do a 2GDFI conversion or why rotaries love MMO? You do know what an OMP is, right?

Just a pop quiz to test how well you studied the FAQ.

racerguy19 08-12-08 12:04 PM

POP QUIZ !?!?!?! :wallbash:

Ummmm......MMO - Marvel Mystery Oil

Ahhhhh.......OMP - Oil Metering Pump

and I haven't got a damn clue what a 2GDFI is !!

2 out of three ain't bad !!

82transam 08-12-08 03:04 PM

haha you get a D, at least you passed ;) 2gdfi is using a second gens coil pack on a first gen. You wire it so it bypasses the distributor cap/rotor for the leading plugs.

ray green 08-12-08 04:30 PM

Hey this new guy is good!

racerguy19 08-12-08 05:10 PM

What kind of benefit is there to doing the 2GDFI....and is it expensive ????

I love road racing.......and this new RX7 of mine will be fun !!

TheRX7Project 08-12-08 05:22 PM

If you want to have something a little better, unless your class doesn't allow it, go MSD. It's fairly cheap, fairly easy, and gives you a great spark.

yeah you were close but those two letters make a huge difference, the main one being, you have a 12a instead of a 13b :D but i'm just picking at you, i'm sure you'll have some questions once you get it, even if they're stupid questions like ... why doesn't my rear winshield wiper nozzle work? :P

and no 2gdfis is not hard, there's several tutorials and shit out there here's the first one i found http://geocities.com/inuissus_cendi/2gcdfis.html and it could be expensive, then again it doesn't have to, it depends whether you have friends that would let you have a cheap 2nd gen coil, or sell it to you for cheap, cheapest i saw on ebay was about 20 bucks with shipping...good luck with it, i'm sure you'll have some fun :D

ray green 08-12-08 06:19 PM

Yep around $25 for a second gen leading coil, shipped (check the 2nd gen section). Installation should take an hour or less.

It won't add horsepower but it looks cool and it evens out the spark, which can give you a smoother idle (virtually guaranteed) and a little better gas mileage. Think about it, each rotor gets it's own coil to fire the leading plug.

That's a good tutorial in the link above but it's actually a lot simpler than all that because you don't need to do anything to the 2G coil, just wire (+) to (+) and (-) to (-) from your stock wiring to the 2G coil pack. Here's a video of what it looks like:

http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=n3Va3xwWzVQ

In this case the 2G coil pack could be removed from the car and put back in a 2nd gen RX-7 if you wanted to. Also it takes about 1 minute to switch back to the stock coils and wires if you ever have any question about the 2GDFI (just remember to keep the extra coil wire in the car).

The trailing coil wire and plug wires in the video are connected to the trailing ports on the dizzy cap, it's better to have them wired through the leading ports on the dizzy:

blackdeath647 08-12-08 07:00 PM

hells yeah i didn't know it was that simple either lol, i should be getting my coil(s) this week sometime, got them from a buddy down in S.C. for 15 bucks shipped (two sets leading and trailing), so basically he's just charging me for gas to go to the post office and shipping lol
