My 1982 GS CSP Project

Quick intro.

This was actually "tranquil's" old car. I got it from him about two weeks ago as seen below. I could have just put a carburetor on it and called it a day, but that is too easy. So know its undergoing work to be a Street Prepared Class C car for occasional auto cross use and when i can, the Hill climbs in Pa.

First thing first, i pulled out the engine to look over everything and see whats needs attention. Through some magical force, my girlfriend actually WANTED to help and she cleaned the engine bay and removed the rust proofing crap. Its about 1/2 done. I have to remove all the crap on the other side.

The engine got the same treatment. Cleaned and painted.

The rear end is also out now. The stock small axle, drum brake, non limited slip rear end, is not going to cut it. Thankfully, the GSL-SE rear end is a legal swap! (this car is stupid clean by the way)

I also bought a set of 280z wheels from a local guy for driving around tires. 4x114.3 lug pattern at 14"x6" and very light. Cleaned them up and painted them front and rear.

One of the more fun technical aspects to this project is that engine. I have to use a stock engine. No porting. BUT the intake manifold and ignition and fueling options are open to anything.

I am planning on using a TWM throttle body mated to the Atkins side draft manifold. This will be driven by a MS unit w/ an FC CAS. I already received the manifold and it looks like it will be great for what i plan on doing. I still want to clean up the inside of it and see what i can do for the ports going into the block.

Looks like you are making good progress. Is that rust i see above the muffler on the rear lower vailence? Car looks pretty solid otherwise, and the interior is clean too.
Nice job on the engine bay, very cool you got your gf to help you with it ;)

Swap in a GSL-SE engine with a Weber 48 IDA as well. That is what I am doing for my CSP car.

Whizbang 06-03-08 12:03 PM

i would use a GSLSE engine if i had one, but i currently do not. So its 12a for now, but the setup i am going to use is can be easily converted for the 13b later on. That and for the hill climbs i want fuel injection seeing its about 6 hours away from me and the climate is totally different. I would rather have a few maps to switch around with and make changes to than fiddling with the carb.

I may be asking you a few things about what you are running suspension wise when i get to that cross road.

Can I rent your girlfriend to clean the engine bay in my FB? LOL

Mickster 06-04-08 01:45 AM

A girlfriend who WANTS to clean the engine bay? You're kidding right? That picture is staged right? Just to fuel dreams right? A gal like that shouldn't be too hard to find... RIGHT!?!?

Kentetsu 06-04-08 04:07 AM

Good work man! Don't worry too much about power for CSP, but rather focus on handling and good tires. I've never lost a race due to a lack of horsepower, even with my tired old motor. :)

Whizbang 06-04-08 07:36 AM

Hill climbs are a little bit more power dependent. Im not sure if the rule change is in effect yet or what the deal is, but for some time you turbo awd sedans have been in the same class C and since there are some decent straight aways in an uphill situation, turbo cars dominated. So they are moving them to Modified. That and the same mods i can do usually increase boost on a turbo car so there a real gap between a 12a and an STi

And she still has only earned GF status? Not life partner or wife?

That black interior is sweet. You are going to have an excellent Rx-7 when you are finished. Be sure to keep us updated with pictures. Good luck.

not only am i impressed that she is helping, thats awesome, my ex gf, helped install my rad, and switch my seats. however when i pulled the seats just recently the bolts where finger loose. lol, i suppose i should have seen that coming. good thing she only installed the passenger seat.

but anyway, im very impressed with how clean that is, what did you use? i need to do this when i pull my motor for my flywheel/motor mounts.

Whizbang 06-11-08 08:17 AM

good carb cleaner and PB Blaster. PB seems to do 80 percent of the work.

Whizbang 06-11-08 08:20 AM

Motor has a new clutch. Transmission is attached.

(109 dollars with a DBA account at Napa. It is made by Valeo. Kit came with everything needed.)

If I'm not helping Peejay tune tonight, i should be putting it back into the car.

Whizbang 06-15-08 09:58 AM

I was busy yesterday. I got the GSL-SE front suspension swapped over complete with Eibachs and adjustabel illuminas. After much profanity Pete and I got the swaybar in. I also got the motor in the night prior. I also pulled the rear end from the GSL-SE last night. Going to clean her up, and install it with the other st swaybar soon enough.
