Wow, what a coincidence, I love your car too. Looks a lot like mine did before I molested it.

ray green 07-13-10 07:54 PM

Molestation is not a good thing. Just ask Roman Polanski.

Jeezus 07-13-10 09:18 PM

Rain, open top, and it STILL didn't get wet inside!

:)

Beaut car Ray!

BrettLinton7 07-13-10 09:34 PM

A nice first gen, no doubt.

We'll convert you over the the FC side soon enough... You're already considering an SE and their fuel injected glory. Pretty soon you'll be wanting a nice T2 :)

dont be jelous

mazdaverx713b 07-13-10 10:44 PM

as always, a beautiful sunbeam silver FB!!! what kind of mileage are you getting out of her?

t_g_farrell 07-14-10 08:22 AM

The goats are jealous!

DivinDriver 07-14-10 10:05 AM

There's a lot there to love, Raymundo.

ray green 07-14-10 10:25 AM

Thanks guys, it's just one of those things, I figured you guys might understand.

Stu, not much rain gets in when that moon roof is open as long as it's coming straight down. During windy storms I close it up, otherwise keeping it open is a good way to vent the car - it's gets hot in the afternoon down here in GA.

Dave the gas mileage is not as good as I want it, around 21 mpg on the highway. I'm trying to figure out why, I've pretty much ruled out vacuum leaks and now I'm taking a closer look at the Nikki, maybe take it apart this weekend to have a closer look.

Brett, in your dreams. 12A's rule.

Banzai 07-14-10 12:10 PM

Getting the goats drunk? Should I even ask how you got all those beads hanging from the rearview...

ray green 07-14-10 07:45 PM

I paid for the beads Banzai, left over booty from when I was riding the floats down in New Orleans.

The Silver One looks great, for sure. But what I really like about her are the trouble free miles. She just doesn't complain.

Here's a pic from this evening:

21 MPG tops for me on the highway, 17 mpg city.... they definitely are not a Prius!!

ray green 07-15-10 09:07 AM

Well yes, not a Prius, which gets about 10 mpg more. But, a Prius costs $20,000+. I got my silver 85 GSL, with 107,000 miles on it, for $1,200. That extra $18,000 buys a lot of gas, not to mention the breaks on taxes, insurance and maintenance costs.

And I get to drive my 12A powered Silver One, not some dumb boring Prius (and no issues with the brakes or accelerator peddle).

DivinDriver 07-15-10 10:06 AM

How many MPG does the goat get?

It gets 20 baaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh's per gallon!!!

ray green 07-15-10 12:44 PM

We measure the goat's consumption in BPH's (Beers Per Hour)

DivinDriver 07-15-10 02:36 PM

At least they don't have to recycle the cans.

ray green 07-15-10 02:52 PM

Yeah when I was first introducing Jackson (the big brown goat) to Coors Lite, he grabbed the pull tab and ate it after the drips ran out.

Needless to say I didn't tell my wife Cathy about this until much later (Cathy was opposed to the goats having beer at the time). Not sure what happened to that pull tab.

RustyRacer 07-15-10 08:29 PM

Looks nice ray, let us know what you find in the carb to increase the mileage. I'm at 20 highway as well.

Keep giving your goats beer and massage them daily. Selling Kobe Goats. who knows it could delicious.

I am really telling on my self now.... we used to pour beer in the dog's water bowl... he would lap it up and beg for more.... we were usually about 3 sheets into the wind by then and used to laugh our asses off when my Cocker Spaniel got drunk and was wobbling around!!!

That whole party came to an end when my wife found out we were getting her dog drunk!!!!...............wow that was a bad night!

She was most likely terrified 'cause she knew what comes after the "first, we get 'er drunk" phase... :egrin:

Glazedham42 07-16-10 11:12 AM

Looking good Ray! Get that windshield trim painted! Rustoleum semi-gloss black is what you need for the job. You won't be sorry.

bad 83 07-16-10 12:51 PM

Looks good Ray. I don't understand why your not getting better fuel mileage. When I drove the SA down there with the Racing Beat intake, header, and 600cfm (YES I said 600), no emmisions, I was averaging almost 22 mpg.

ray green 07-16-10 01:16 PM

I've painted that trim a couple times Jaime, it lasts a year or two and then goes back to the normal stock first gen window trim finish - speckled. I've decided the Mazda engineers wanted it that way, so now I like the speckled look better than the all black look.

Sam I think something is screwed up with the Nikki, maybe the accelerator pump. I'm also getting some hesitation when the gas peddle first goes down. Usually I get 22-23 mpg on the highway commute. Time to get greasy and figure it out.

I'm a real animal lover, that's why I give the goats my beer sometimes. I just want them to be happy and that beer really works. I can't figure out why women don't want our animals to be happy, can you guys?

Old School, sounds like we have a lot in common. Except your silver FB has more decals:

Ray, per your request, here are a few pics of a sunbeam silver 85 GSL that i had a couple years back. i ended up selling it, though i wish i hadn't. it had 55K original milkes on it when i sold it and was 100% reliable. the car still smelled new inside. i bought it from a local dealership. i offered the guy $1500 cash and he agreed because he couldnt get it to start and it had a bad clutch. the previous owner was a very old man that apparently had an issue with riding the clutch. i replaced the clutch and installed a new pilot bearing, slave cylinder and hose, oil filter pedestal o-rings, plugs, wires, oil change, and coolant flush and the car was ready to go. i used the money from the car as a down payment on my RX-8.

That's a lot of Silver FB's Alex, where'd you find them all??

Nice decision on the SA Old School! That is the smart thing to do. Fine examples like these will only increase in value and beauty over time

https://i378.photobucket.com/albums/...7/P1040103.jpg

And it will keep this one company:

https://i378.photobucket.com/albums/...7/P1050380.jpg

Now Dave, trading in that fine Silver FB for an FE, well I'm not so sure that was a good idea.

Ray, i didnt want to sell the car...but another 7 enthusiest came along and paid top dollar for the car..so knowing that it went to a good home was comforting to know. plus, my wife wanted me to get a car with a back seat for the kids...in my mind, there was only one logical choice, an FE.

ray green 07-19-10 09:40 PM

That doesn't make it right Dave, but we will forgive you. Who got her anyway?

Ray, a guy in MI bought the car. he owns a company that produces velocity stacks. it was extremely difficult to turn the keys over... at the time, i had a choice to make as to which 7 to sell. it was either my 88 10AE, my 80 LS or the 85 GSL. those were the three i drove the least and i decided i'd sell the 85 because with the 10AE, the money we got for our wedding ,my wife allowed me to use on a new engine for the car.. the 80 LS i would take to car shows and my wife knew how much i enjoyed cruising the SA.. and the 85, i was driving near every weekend or nice day and while i enjoyed it, my main concern was that the previous owner used some sort of a grinder or dremel of sorts to remove the pilot bearing at one time. i was able to clean up the mess from the uneducated and i replaced the disc which was pretty worn. the pilot bearing was non existant when i dropped the trans and though i got a new bearing in there, i never felt good about it. i explained this in detail to the guy who bought the car and he said that he was fine with it and that he would drive it on nice days and to shows as long as it would hold up. he does still have my number in case he would sell it and i wanted to buy it back. so with that said, i was very sad to see the GSL go and i felt sick to my stomache when i watched it drive away. the upside to this is that my wife <3's the RX-8. she doesnt complain about riding in it and it seems to be a car she enjoys as well. my daughter on the other hand consistently tells me that my 85 GS with the SE engine is her car and wants to drive it.. at 3 years old, i think she's got a few years before i'll hand the keys over ;)

Ray its all part of the total package. Del Hortos require a side mounted alternator
and electric fans. Doesn't hurt to throw in some GM and Ford parts as well.

ray green 07-20-10 05:34 PM

Dave you are a true Rotor Head, two RX-7's for every member in the family, including the 3 year old. I still wish you had kept the GSL, it is the exact same model and finish as mine, we would have had matching cars (the leather interior in mine is an upgrade, but still have the original red velor seats, they're in great shape).

Tim you just talked me out of Del Horto's for life. I still like them in YOUR car though.
