Very interesting. I didn't search through the page for long, but was there any stats on weight, performance or anything?

blackdeath647 06-22-09 07:45 AM

talk about weight reduction lol

DivinDriver 06-22-09 09:55 AM

By the time he's got enough batteries in it to go more than a few miles, I bet it'll weigh more than the original build did.

Motor specs:

5500RPM
70HP @ 120 volt 435 amps

It's the amperage requirement that is going to bite. You need ~52 kilowatts to develop 70hp (746w to the hp).

A typical 12V car battery is good for about 500 amp/hours, or 6 kilowatt/hours. To run that beast at full output, he'll drain 10 fully-charged car batteries (10 batteries gets him his 120 volts the easiest way) completely in an hour. Of course, it won't be running flat-out constantly. Useable driving time will be about 4 hours, I'd guess.

Car batteries will weight in at around 60 lbs, so he's got 600 pounds of batteries (plus rackage, cables, and power-control circuitry) to add in.

The neanderthol was doing an electric first gen with a 12A tranny

NCross 06-22-09 09:00 PM

Whats wrong with the 12a tranny? There's been a couple electric 1st gens. They say you keep the tranny in 3rd at all times or you roast the tires.

one thing i like about electric cars... the torque... instant torque

Well, it's definitely different. Tho, the amount of weight he'll be putting into that thing after all is said and done will make you wonder about its "performance". And, mileage.

if you just keep it in 3rd all the time, why leave it there? just go direct, and take the trans weight, and add more battery

DivinDriver 06-23-09 03:55 PM

Third gear is not 1:1 ratio... you're still getting reduction gearing out of the trans.

Most electrics that use pba batteries are deep cycle marine grade and they keep their transmissions in 2nd, may be different in rx7. But why do they always have to be painted bright fucking green? Why not british racing green at the most, or black and make it that much more spooky. Nice build though, I really like those wheels.

Agreed. I know people are all about "going green", but hell... bright glow-in-the-darkness-of-space green?

Only time that ever looked good was on an original 12a RX7
