GSL-SE Transmission Fill Plug

1 Attachment(s)
Hi, everyone,

My Haynes manual didn't seem to mention the location of the transmission gear oil fill plug for my 1985 GSL-SE.

Is the plug I am pointing to in this photo the trans fill plug (this is on the drivers side of the trans)?

I have never come across an extruding 3/8" square plug before; do auto parts stores sell 3/8" square sockets?

Also, should I put some tape or RTV on the threads of the fill plug when I reinstall it?

The drain plug didn't seem to have a washer on it. Should I buy a crush washer to use on the trans drain plug?

Thanks in advance!

Yes that's the fill plug. I can look tomorrow when out in garage, have mine up in the air currently. As of right now i think it's 14mm,maybe 16mm. Open end wrench in whichever size will take out fill plug with no problem, shouldn't be too tight, just snug is tight enough. Filler plug is pipe thread which seals as it's tightened. The drainplug should have a sealing washer,i think i can see it in pic. Look closely when you have it off.

Sometimes they are bitch to get loose. You can try an open end wrench that fits but if it rounds it
off or can't break it loose theres another way. Hit it with a torch to heat up around the plug, try
not to heat up the plug itself and stick a large vise grip on it and smack it with a hammer. If no
vise grip use a pipe wrench instead.
