First gens, WTF!

I know, a pretty stupid thread title for what is probably a stupid thread, but here goes.

It's been a while since I've owned a 7, and longer since I owned a first gen 7. Anyways long story short a few years ago I had a first gen rx-7 that I absolutely loved. However, I was in college at the time so cash was short and I had to sell it for some thing more reliable and winter friendly. So I wound up trading it for an NA FC, thinking it would be some what fun, but easier to live with, I soon learned that NA FC's felt more like a RWD camry and couldn't even come close to giving me the same amount of quirky and raw fun the first gen did. Fast forward a bit, I drive a boring protege to work and and I picked up a ninja as my toy. Now I've saved up a decent amount of cash to buy a bigger bike, but to be honest and this is where it gets weird, I just don't think a 700cc+ crotch rocket is as much fun as my first gen was. I've also toyed with the idea of picking up different car and done a lot of test drives and to be honest a z28 camaro, or awd turbo eclipse just isn't nearly as fun. So here I am sitting on a decent chunk of money that was meant for a sport bike and I'm honestly thinking of just going out and picking up another FB. Am I nuts? are there any other people here that think a car that runs 17's in the quarter is more fun then a newer 14 second sports car, or a bike that runs 11's? I'm somewhat conflicted, figure I'd ask for your input.

i love my fb man, iv driven other cars and nothing compares, just the torquey amazingness, i love it.
the only thing that compares in my opinion is an awd suby, those are insane, they'll take any corner on a dime, have great power and i just love the boxer sound.
its upto you man

C_Town_Tuner 06-10-09 02:36 AM

do it...you know you want to

thunkrd 06-10-09 03:02 AM

definitely first gens ftmfw. with the money you saved up, you should buy 2, 1 to keep as stock and 1 to mod :D

i have a few first gens and i have an RX-8. i can't tell you which one(s) i drive more. the SA and FB are an entertainment bargain. its not only the accleration that makes a car as good as it is or is not. it smore of the complete package that the SA an FB offers. it comes down to being a more basic and less refined sports car, but for RX-7 enthusiests like us, this is more of a compliment than a criticism. the first gen needs no apologies.

^ +1.

I love my -SE to death. The minute I bought the car and sat in it, I fell in love with it. The smoothness of the engine, the interior fit me like a glove, the ability for it to take turns almost as fast as straightaways, it's awesome.

I say drop that money into a 1st Gen and mod it up. I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

As said above there is something about such a wonderful basic car that isn't perfect but oh somuch fun to drive the crap out of. and with some good pads and tries you can make some more expencive cars feel realy bad at a track day.

Go with the first gen. Sure it isn't blindingly fast but it a pure sports car. It's simple, moderately quick, handles well, small/light, and RWD. The rotary is an added bonus. I was thinking about getting a bike but I decided to save it to mod my FB once the engine pops

codytheoutlaw 06-11-09 12:59 AM

i sold my bike and bought a first gen. i dont miss my bike one bit. it was fast, but to dangerous for me.

aa35199 06-11-09 02:56 AM

I have made up my mind, I'm going for it. Give me a few weeks to a month for the "look what I bought" post. My friends thought I was nuts when I told them.

thunkrd 06-11-09 03:22 AM

just buy a nice one and blow their minds!

capitalcrew 06-11-09 05:38 AM

I just traded my bike for two SAs, if that makes any difference to you. ;)

ive been looking for an FB replacement too, and not finding. the rx8 is the only thing ive driven that was even close....

and yes its not the speed, its more the mechanical feel of the car.

ive driven some older sports cars, i OWN a tr3, and they are closer

blackdeath647 06-11-09 09:49 AM

they're glooooooorious

DivinDriver 06-11-09 10:02 AM

And you're far less likely to swallow a bee!

Super82 06-11-09 10:24 AM

I sold my 600cc rocket for an FB as well. I don't really miss riding a streetbike, and if I ever get another bike it will be a supermoto.

NCross 06-11-09 01:13 PM

Or you can buy both like me :D

jdjl1987 06-11-09 01:26 PM

Keiichi Tsuchiya (the guy that inspired Initial D) loves ae86s because of their lower power and better balance. More fun to slam corners at full throttle.

thunkrd 06-11-09 01:43 PM

ae86 is awesome, but i still like rx7s more. plus on HV or BMI they always seem ecstatic about fbs and sas, ae86 not so much

What is HV or BMI?

as a person that has a 1000cc "crotch rocket" (and a motorcycle competition license) and a turbo FB, I wouldn't worry about the bike if you have a ninja that's fun. Since you called it a toy I'm going to assume it's of the 600cc persuasion. 600's and 1000's do the same to 60mph, and bigger i-4's aren't even fun till over 100mph. that's why I ride a twin.

If you ride a 600cc bike the "right way" it's impossible to grow out of it, the only people that think they need to "step up" are posers that don't know what they're doing anyway. Do a track school, learn how to touch knee and you'll stop wanting a bigger bike.

Don't get me wrong, my Aprilia is the greatest bike I've ever ridden, but it's balanced like and makes the power of a modern 600. My next bike will be a 675.

Let me bottom line you, you should have your bike situation sorted, maybe you just need some track time to rediscover it. Now buy the car you want and your life will be complete, like mine. If you just get a bigger bike you'll still have a hole for the car and I really doubt it'll be too much more fun.

I agree :icon_tup: I have a zx6r 636 with a power commander and it gives me all the fun I need, the only reason I want a zx10 is so I can lower and stretch it for drag. I myself am picking up an FB this weekend, I've wanted one since I can remember, though it mans I have to get rid of my FC, I believe that the FB will be much better and worth it. Old skool FTW!

capitalcrew 06-11-09 08:57 PM

mmm... did some one mention a d675? I want.
