fc fb comparison

i know a lot of second gen peeps don't like first gens (and vice versa)...

has anyone raced one to see a comparison?

yesterday i raced my friend's FC in 3rd gear and it was very close, with me just barely winning (i shifted at 7k but he still had rpms left in 3rd so he might have won)

power / drivetrain mods of my car are test pipe, powerpulse muffler and stock egi etc

his car is full headers to RB exhaust, wired open aux ports, GTUs rear end, and lightweight flywheel

would you say win for first gens?

back in high school i had a super base 86 FC, and my friend has a GSL-SE. the two cars are very close....

notice please that my FC is long gone, and he still has the SE

thunkrd, you have been around long enough to know if you are running an SE vs FC(86-8) stock you are giving him about 30hp.

When you compare the mods his header system is far better than your system. His will be offering much less back pressure allowing the engine to increase RPM at a much faster rate. Additionally it will allow the engine to make more power than your system for the obvious reasons. Look also at the pipe diameter size his is significantly larger. The wired open aux ports are going to gain that much if anything, other than making sure they work. It might allow the engine to breathe a little better throughout the range but it will sacrifice low end torque. You have to remember if the ECU hasn't been remapped it still will base fuel delivery to the aux ports based on RPM and airflow not if the port is open. Discussing the rear ratios, if he is running a GTUs rear then he has a 4.30 gear set compared to your at best 4.08. His lightflywheel vs your stock one makes a huge difference when it comes to RPM.

So what does all this breakdown to...... all things considered optimally your pushing about 155hp his is pushing 185hp, his car should accelerate much better due to ratios and rotating mass and exhaust, his car is still a fat pig and during your little exercise if he said he still had RPM left in 3rd after you shifted at 7k..... I seriously doubt he had as much "extra RPM" as he let on and I would be willing to bet he doesn't know the safe range for a stock engine, he was probably close to pushing 8500-9000 RPM depending on how far you guys were going. I wouldn't want to do that SUSTAINED with a stock engine.

As to 2nd gen vs 1st gen its apples and oranges for the most part 1st gen was designed to be a nimble lightweight 2 seater, the 2nd gen was more designed as an upgraded touring sports car. I can say that because I have and drive both.

Its def a win for a First gen

I would put an SE up against even a stock RX8 (auto of course)

The SE is a fighter :)

I destroyed my 94 Integra LS with my brother driving.

mazdaverx713b 05-21-10 12:26 PM

the 6mt RX-8 has a 0-60 time of 5.6-5.9 seconds and the stock SE is around 8.0 seconds.. the auto RX-8 is only a 4 port and lets say that the 0-60 on that is about 7.0 seeconds, i'd say an SE with some mods might beat the auto RX-8 in a drag race. the SE would not stand a chance against a stock 6mt RX-8.

true. i actually took a 911 with the rx8 from a roll. same rx8 also pulled on a factory 5 cobra (by the rules i think they are limited to 240hp) out of turn 11@ infineon.

the rx8 will also match an ITS prepped fc on the roadcourse.

the rx8 isn't slow....

Jeezus 05-21-10 02:29 PM

A friend in his S5 with cone filter and catback couldn't shake me in my full exhaust and stripped
nikki FB. On the highway, going up hill he would sloooowly begin to walk me, but any flat stretch
I would keep up or begin to walk. We both topped out at around 130.

jshiz 05-21-10 04:01 PM

I raced a stock NA FC with my GSL SE. I beat him with a passenger while he was riding solo.

Starfox07 05-21-10 04:44 PM

I just drove a 6 speed RX8 today actually.

My impression...it felt slower than my FB. The AC was on and there were 3 people in the car, but it just didn't feel like it had the same mid-range punch nor top end as my full-exhaust SE. Maybe I just wasn't driving it hard enough, but it didn't feel very fast at ALL. I was really disappointed because I really wanted to like it. I did love everything else though.

DivinDriver 05-21-10 04:46 PM

The first gen looks far cooler, so who cares which one is faster?

Jimbo II 05-21-10 06:57 PM

Amen. My mate bought a 6 speed 03 rx8 type s few weeks back. Sick sounding/looking/handling car. Not as fast/deafening/sex as my SA though. But I'd rather drive the 8 as its easy and comfy and you can still have fun, and take passengers and not worry about being pulled over.

thunkrd 05-23-10 03:16 PM

for fun i'd take a 7, for comfort i'd have an 8

the same guy raced an rx8 and they were very close to even

i just put my cats back in for smog check and i passed fairly well... not as clean as i'd wished tho

i think that's the problem, the rx8 doesn't feel that fast. a stock FD feels really fast, even though its not really.

rotordad 05-24-10 02:01 PM

I own two FC's & two FB's, I will say that my FC's a re faster than my FB's. I like my FB's they have old school class, when I was younger & speed was an option I decided to mod the FC's over the FB's. Now having a clean FB is enough for me.

point-blank 05-24-10 02:09 PM

Fcs have turboooooooo lol
Really I love both, the first rx7 I ever drove was a 79 and that is what got me hooked :)

What can anyone say as far as handling goes? I have always wondered

BigBoss 05-24-10 04:04 PM

I had an FC before i bought my 1st gen and it did felt a little faster compare to the fb. I wanted to raced my own s5 convertible against my SC 1st gen, but it didn't happened because someone rear ended my poor convertible.

I expect to walk stock N/A fc with current setup on my FB.

NODE lives up north of SF, and to get to his house you have to drive on the awesomest roads EVER (actually its the one in the car commercials)

the SA is FUN, its not very fast, but it does feel good. its very direct

the FC is much faster, and its nearly effortless, but you loose some of the connected with the car feeling.

Starfox07 05-24-10 09:10 PM

GSL-SE and S4 N/a should be just about dead even.

orion84gsl 05-24-10 09:15 PM

^

This is what I noticed the very few times I autocrossed an FC. The one I raced was a TurboII. It felt a sloppy in the corners and didn't react smoothly. If I let off the throttle it would dive like a Country Squire station wagon. It was a very disconnected feeling and you give up a lot of confidence trying to drive it hard.

mikeric 05-24-10 09:37 PM

I think my GSL-SE can probably take on a FC or two.

Starfox07 05-24-10 10:04 PM

I raced a full exhaust, emissions delete 240SX (91 with KA24DE) today. My car (full exhaust, otherwise stock) was able to pull ahead to where his front bumper was at my door and kept him there to 80 when I let off. The 240 has better gears for highway though. On the 30 punch I was able to pull a car length or so.

I also beat him silly through the corners :) (racing beat hardware compared to stock and worn out haha)

Kentetsu 05-25-10 11:38 AM

fc=fast
fb=quick

Handling; if you were to modify them at all, I think the fb is a better platform due to its light weight. In autocross, I don't get beat by FCs, turbo or not turbo.

thunkrd 05-25-10 01:49 PM

agreed, for lower speed stuff an fb is better..

my fb does brake better tho

I used to autocross my FC and I only autocrossed my FB once on my test drive. The FB is much more tossable without wanting to spin out. At a full out open track, Spec Miatas were riding my tail on the straights.

That problem has since been solved :)
