FB to FC headlight conversion?

Has anyone done any type of conversion like this? Or maybe custom? So that you can mount FC style (square) headlights in an FB housing? Or maybe some other custom type of housing.

Kerebrus 08-27-08 06:29 PM

so i'm guessing no one has seen or done this before?

FBsliderseven 08-28-08 02:05 AM

i was thinking about doing this. probably wouldnt be hard to do. i think i saw a picture of an fb w/ fc square lights before.

Are you referring to headlights like this?

tuto88t2 08-28-08 02:56 PM

that ish looks nice! lol

Kerebrus 08-28-08 04:20 PM

That looks nice but no. I still want the pop up's just instead of a round headlight it would be a square one.

DasBoost 08-28-08 04:35 PM

Sorry, but i haven't seen it done as yet. Could be pretty sweet.

Kerebrus 08-28-08 05:12 PM

Alright, I will make that a project after paint and turbo setup is done :D

How did you do that headlight mod?
Do you have pictures or a "how to" on a webpage somewhere?
Looks like it would remove a few pounds of weight from the front end due to removing the popup mechanism. Have you considered adding lexan covers for aerodynamic reasons?

^^ i was gonna ask him the same thing about aerodynamics lol, which in reality the pop up headlights aren't too aerodynamic neither lol

Kerebrus 08-29-08 12:12 PM

Yea i'd be interested to see how he did that, how much it cost, etc.

Jeezus 08-29-08 12:17 PM

It isn't his car. Also, take out the headlight and put a cardboard backing on where the hole is, make a fiberglass mold out of it. Then make a fiberglass housing with it, and it would probably be a good idea to have the headlight bucket from a 2nd gen handy. measure the hole for the 2nd gen headlight, cut it, install it. Drill your bolt holes, and attach it. Viola.

I have never done fiberglass work before, but I plan on getting into it very soon. I had an idea like this but I was going to use the slim chevy head lights.

Like Jeezus said, this is not my car. I just found that pic on the web to give you guys/gals some ideas. This kit is very similar to the CP kit which was universal to round or square headlight conversions. The only bad thing with the CP kit is that it requires you to do some minor cutting in the stock housings which I’m not a fan of, sorry. If you do a search on this forum you can get some ideas as well. Just as Jeezus said, this can be done with some card board (as a template), sheet metal, srews, shears, and some plexi/ lexan. If you want to get real creative you can split some PVC pipe down the center and fiberglass it give that 93 pod look. All of this can be picked up as the one stop racing shop aka Home Depot. Lol. Oh, and home made conversion have been done over here, just take a look at Romeo’s car. No problems with aero dynamics and the car runs mid to high 9’s last time I checked all day.

BTW, sorry for the long post but I knew this would open up a can of worms. Lol

Pop ups are poor for aerodynamics period. Domestic guys can build boxes to run 9's all day long. All it takes is enough money and power. That's not hard. Take identical cars and drivers to a road course, one with the lights up and the others with them down. I bet the one with them down would run quicker times. Pop up systems also weigh alot more than a flush system would. The CP kit only required notching of the front clip section behind the headlight assembly, not the housings themselves. If you've ever taken the headlight assembly and linkage out, you'll notice it is nearly impossible to fit DOT legal lights in that amount of space without sticking up past the stock lines of the headlight cover

I love the pop ups, I just want the head lights to be square not round!

Not to get off topic but the only thing the domestic guys got going for them is gearing. You know thers somthing up when you have a 2 1/2 ton sled and 500 HP and run low 12's hig 11's

FirebirdSlayer666 08-29-08 10:25 PM

I don't think anything with 500hp and weighs 5000lbs could do low 12's or high 11's. Only if it had like a 7.10 gearing or something stupidly rediculous. And CBZ, I love pop ups too!! But when they are down LOL I love the smooth lines that they allow the car to have but then it's kinda ruined once they are up. I don't think square lights fit the first gen though, just my opinion

Noo the square would look great that's what I like about the FC's and FD's haha. I really despise the circular shape we have :/ But yea I agree, how much is that CP racing kit anyways?

FirebirdSlayer666 08-29-08 11:15 PM

It was rediculously expensive when it was available. Like $500 or something like that. You just need some different headlights vs. the sealed beams. Some H4 housings look a million times better. The FD's doesn't look terrible cause it's not perfectly square, it curves and kind of flows with the body and headlight cover. I think the Knightsports kits were the greatest pop up light kits ever

I wouldn't mind having square headlights to match my modded square tail lights.

Plus, finding a slimmer square head light would mean the pop-ups wouldn't pop-up as high. Think NA miata stock and then NA low profiles.
