FB convertible...Do you know this car?

So I've come across this car more than once as I'm looking through CL and wondering why no one is buying it.
Does anyone know anything about it or its history?
It has a Mariah wb kit with modified front fenders and some old school wheels I'm liking!
I wouldn't mind an "Ultima" but I can't seem to find one :)

i've also seen that on CL, but it's been a while now. if it still keeps showing up maybe it's a fake ad.

I think it's legit. Sold by a car dealer in Cadillac MI, its a Pacific Avatar conversion with apparently less than 8000 miles. Somebody should buy it to preserve its historic importance.

They probably an arm and a leg for it. Nice looking.

The car is still for sale, I've communicated with the seller. However, when looking at it from underneath you can see the welded square tube and bolts running through it and this really scares me. It's a nice car to look at though!

Well, they had to stiffen the body somehow. I think they did a decent conversion job from what reviews of the period indicate.

It's not worth the $11,495 asking price.

That car has been sitting for a very long time. It needs a new top and paint job and who knows what else. Seller claims it was last on the road in 1991 but has been started and driven recently. However, the photos shown are the same ones used to sell this car on Cape Cod Massachusetts back in 2012. It's been listed on the New Hampshire Craigslist site once a week for at least the past 3 years, only a few towns over from me. If it was worth anywhere near the seller's asking price of $9,000 it would have sold ages ago. It's basically an unsellable car whether it's restored or not. The wheels are valuable items, hard to find, and would look good on something else. The motor is stock...low miles...but without being driven it probably still needs a rebuild and all rubber bits replaced. Suspension looks stock as well, so shocks are probably expired, bushings dry rotten, and springs will sag from sitting. It's unique, for sure, just not valuable, especially not when you factor in the cost to restore it.

This car is nowhere near my style, however it is a very significant part of the history of the 1st generation RX-7. Al Dooley formed the company Pacific Avatar. Starting in 79, and running through 87, he and his company built only 126 examples of the SA and FB Pacific Avatar convertible. These cars commanded a base price of $25,000 and were completely customizeable. Some current pictures of the car would be great to see and the top of course would have to be custom made or be left down. If it runs and drives well and is free of rust, its worth some money and worth putting money into. Not many of these cars come up for sale and if it were bought right it would be a nice collectible piece of RX-7 history.

Exactly. AS our cars get older and older, matching engine/chassis numbers and complete originality matter but things like period correct improvements and commercially recognized conversions become accepted and coveted too. If I had no Fb at all I would be severely tempted by this one. Plus everybody needs to have a convertible sometime in their lives - I have a 435i hardtop convertible : ) .

I semt a buddy that collects rare cars like this to check it out, if it's the same car, and it is trashed. The top is ruined along with most of the interior, the paint is shot and it barely runs. When someone that pisses away $20,000 on a shotgun won't buy it you have to wonder

Keep us updated on what he finds. Also, if he takes some pictures of the car in its current state, can you post them?
