Exhaust idea

After messing with my exhaust yesterday, and seeing its probably going to be needing replacement in the not too-distant future, I got an idea. Obviously I want to do a header and pre-silencer, but then I had the notion of dumping it out the side, just ahead of the passenger side rear tire, either one larger or two smaller pipes. Anybody ever do this? My only concern would be a: heating up the cabin, and b: burning up the paint. Am I stupid for even thinking about it?

Check out the link in my signature. This will take you to a page of race videos I put together. There are two videos of Man in Black that you will want to check out. He piped his exhaust out on both sides of the car, right in front of the rear tire. Not sure what else he's got under there, but I can tell you its loud as hell.

One concern I'd have is heating up the rear tire.

dont you want to be a nitro dragster while you pick up your milk and eggs on the way to grandmoms house?

just thinking about where the tire actually is, I'd be worried about passengers stepping out and burning themselves, or heating up the paint etc, and clearance issues as there is no tunnel. Be interesting to see but i know i would never do it.

interesting idea, i think it'll look great, and yes it would be loud, maybe have them coming out the rear from the front tires?...only thing to worry about there would be the paint...but i suppose as long as you put some sort of wrap, or shield it won't get into it.......i also said there because sometimes when i have someone riding with me, they're not used to how low it is so they have to reach back to the rear end of the door and use it as leverage to get out, i wouldn't want anyone getting burnt.

I guess i was to vague with my intial post, but it won't be straight through exhaust, I do plan on having a muffler too.

Header, pre-silencer, muffler, exit

you probably won't have enough room from the header to put a presilencer and a muffler of any significance. if you do it I would love to see some pics of it. keep us posted.

Well with the mustang cobra r, they went all the way back to mufflers, then went forward again. kind of an awkward setup but it still sounded great.

i saw something near that. it was header, muffler, short tube and turndown ahead of the axle.

it was really boomy. he's since switched to a more conventional system, and it sounds like all the other cars now, but its really directional too, if the exhaust is pointed at you its LOUD

After I made the 3" exhaust for the widebody, I had a section of 3" tubing left over, so I made a side exhaust pipe the bolted right off the header and exited in front of the rear wheel. No pre-silencer or muffler. Can you say loud, I have to wear ear plugs in the shop even when the engine is at idle, about 1500 rpm on the 1/2 bp.

There isn't enough pipe length to install a pre-silencer and muffler for a side exit exhaust, let alone enough clearance to the pavement for either. The side exhaust setup I like are the ones that come through the front fender right behind the wheel, duals are even better. Great for shooting flames, especially at the track if you can line up in the left hand lane. Works well for intimidating the competition and making them deaf at the same time. :rlaugh:

hey actually it isnt really that hard to run your pipes out the side i did it on my car it was more of a nusicance because there wasnt a tunnel for it so i jus run off the main pipe goin bak and split it rite infront of the back tires its loud but not too loud i still have the stock catalytivc converter on there the main thing is clearance when your going over speed bumps thats bout it

Speaking of side-exit exhaust:
