Does anyone else here have a huge collection of RockAuto magnets?

I've got tons of magnets now, probably 80-90, to the point that they completely cover the sides of my standup toolbox. Does anyone else have a ton of these things, and anyone want to trade?

DivinDriver 06-28-12 10:00 AM

I don't have near that many - - maybe 15-20 - - also stuck on my tool chest.

I may have a couple duplicates I could trade. Will check tonight.

I'll have a couple more soon; the wife's car needs struts!

ray green 06-28-12 12:52 PM

I have nine of them on the fridge door, probably more around here someplace.

I'll bring them to the next OGTA meeting if you want to expand your collection Crit, we could use the space on the fridge and I'll be getting more I'm sure.

From the Fridge:

Brian's Malibu (2 copies)

Mark's MBG (2 copies)

Steve's Willys

Curtis' Buick

Brent's Jeep

Dmitri's Volga

Mike's Cadillac

Didn't realize anyone actually saved those things lol, I usually toss them....

rwatson5651 06-28-12 03:25 PM

I couldnt save them even if I wanted to, It would tip the wife off about how much stuff I buy. Could'nt have that. I have to secretly burn the boxes!!

ray green 06-28-12 03:35 PM

"I usually toss them.... "

Sean, have you ever stopped to think about what all that excess magnetism is doing to the New Jersey land fills?

Also, Robert, I've discovered that if you stack them up on each other, they stick together like double sticky tape, you can hide a bundle of 20 or 30 in your dash compartment.

Except that if you slide them apart, they let go in small discrete energy steps, kind of like rubbing a popsicle stick over a washboard. It's kind of cool, you should try it.

Anybody know why they do that? Sounds like an engineering issue.

Nice to know I'm not the only one! I have to beat her home when I see that my order arrived to avoid a good reprimand :spank: Unless of course it is something that I can coerce her into getting, things I say she'll use...

Crit 06-29-12 10:15 AM

I had to explain to the wife that whenever I place a large order, it's likely to ship in multiple boxes from different warehouses, and THAT is the reason I have so many.

Not entirely true.

LOL Ray, I'm pretty sure that's the least of this states concerns. With any luck most of my trash goes to PA anyway ;)

Yes, I do.

The rubbery magnetic material they are made from (rubberized Barium Ferrite, or BaFe) is magnetized in narrow stripes so that it can stick even to mildly magnetized materials, so sheets of it can be stacked & manipulated easily for shipping/production, and so it will also still cling strongly regardless of how big or small a piece is used but still remove easily. it's also easier to make a bunch of little magnetic fields as the stuff comes off a roll, rather than one big field.

Fields look like this:

NSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNS
NSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNS
NSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNS
NSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNS
NSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNS
NSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNS
NSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNS

BaFe sheets used to be used a lot in the access-control ID badges a company I used to work for made. We bought sheets of it that weren't magnetized at all yet, and magnetized dot patterns into card-sized pieces to make the 'code' before laminating them in plastic.

ray green 06-29-12 04:41 PM

Wow, that's profound. Thanks for the explanation DD.

So it goes something like this?:

NSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNS
_NSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNS
NSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNS
_NSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNS
NSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNS
_NSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNS
NSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNS

NSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNS
NSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNS
NSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNS
NSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNS
NSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNS
NSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNS
NSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNS

And then back again?

I think I'm going to put in a rockauto order just to get some more of those magnets.

DivinDriver 06-29-12 04:52 PM

Yup.

Fun science experiment; put a piece of paper or thin plastic over the magnet side, then sprinkle iron filings on it. Tap it to juggle the sheet and they'll trace the fields for you. Picture worth a thousand words etc.

Jeff20B 07-01-12 11:15 AM

I have nine so far. The willys and two suburbans. Plus some others like a 240z and a race car.

Yes, about the magnetic field weirdnesses, some poorly made rubber magnets have N and S just kinda randomly all across the surface. But these rockauto ones seem to be decent.

I'd guess it's:
NSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNS
NSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNS
NSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNS
NSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNS
NSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNS
NSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNS
NSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNSNS

Or rather more like this:
NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

My dad has an interesting magnetic field inspection sheet. Made of thin plastic, it contains a nickel fluid in some sort of binder and is very thin. I wonder if I can find it in the pile. It'd be cool to see what these rockauto things actually look like.

rwatson5651 07-01-12 07:34 PM

You know something?, Its pretty sad when a conversation about something as simple as refrigerator magnets goes over my head.

You smart guys depress me.........

If I had room in my head for "BaFe" then I would use it to remember where my car keys keep getting off to!!!

DivinDriver 07-02-12 12:38 AM

What are "car keys?" I used to know what those were...

Hmmmm. I don't have as many as I thought:

#80 Mika's Edsel
#20 Andrew's Barracuda
#54 John's Ramcharger
#015 Paul's TVR
#61 Andy's Dodge
#45 Brandon's Lincoln
#57 Mike's Camaro
#55 Alex's GTO
#86 Jim's Buick

I think I may have tossed out some duplicates a year or so back. & I know I've gotten a couple boxes over time that had no magnets. Usually only one per order regardless of the number of boxes.

LMAO I was just thinking the same thing. I'm sitting here reading this thread wondering wtf they are talking about...

ray green 07-03-12 10:56 PM

I hear you Sean, it's all a mystery to me too.

It's especially hard to figure how Crit has collected so many of them. Here's what he brought to the OGTA meeting this evening:

:egrin::nod: Really made my day!

ray green 10-18-12 07:34 PM

I have to have one.

DD, how much you selling them for?

Could you autograph it for me?

DivinDriver 10-18-12 08:01 PM

Ray, if you pm me your mailing address, I'd be pleased to present you with one of the ones they sent me.

Autographed "to Ray, the Wankel Whisperer" if you really want me to dirty it up with my hen-scratch.

ray green 10-18-12 10:03 PM

Be sure to use an indelible pen!

PM sent, thanks!

Thanks DD!

DivinDriver 10-25-12 10:42 AM

My pleasure, Ray... sorry about my untidy handwriting.

It'll be interesting to hear if/when anyone actually receives one with their parts order. Kinda surreal to think of my car's pic going out to people I don't know, heh.

DreamInRotary 10-25-12 02:59 PM

That's awesome, congrats DD!

t_g_farrell 10-25-12 03:23 PM

Check out those waffles! Nice pic of your car Glenn.

Ray you need to get some waffles. I have a set I can sell you CHEEP!
