Carb advice for CA '79
Hi guys-thanks advance for the help. I have a 79 that has the factory carb that needs a rebuild. With the recent change in the California smog laws I can now run pretty much whatever I want so long as it's at least as clean as the original set up.
That would seem to open up a lot of options, ideally I'd use an EFI set up but after doing some searching here that seems like it's a non-trivial path. She's a road car, used for running around fun and occasional longer road trips. Livability and reliability is more important then maximum performance. Is there a bolt on carb that you all would recommend? Rebuild the existing one and be done with it? Thanks! |
Sounds like you should stick with a Nikki, as it is original equipment, but get it expertly hogged out so it increases performance and drivability.
You will also want to step away from points and into a direct fire upgrade from an 81-85 model. I like and personally use DLIDFIS. |
Thanks Jeff - good point on the electronic ignition too.
Is there a rebuilder for the carbs that you all recommend? Easy enough to just do it myself? |
There's a guy on Facebook with a CP Racing widebody FB who's getting a name for himself rebuilding and hogging Nikki's. His name is Derek Hall, check him out and send him a message. Tell him I sent you

Rebuild the nikki and convert to DFIS ignition. Then look at doing the carb.

Leave the stock needles and seats alone. All aftermarket kits come with new ones but they are garbage.

Thanks for the education and ideas here.

What part of Socal are you in? Look up R&R Rotary in Irvine, he hooked up one of my friends with a Modified Nikki in a SA and that things screams now
