A bit of RX7 nostalgia...trivia question

Ok, the two pictures attached below are a part off my RX-7. This is a part I put on this car back in 1985 or 1986, and had forgotten all about until the other day when i was stripping her for restoration....

Question for the forum is this.....

WHAT IS THIS PART? AND WHAT WAS IT FOR?

I will give you a few of hints...

1) Its aftermarket, best I remember was sold thru the RX-7 Club of America back in the day.

2) It was designed to solve an oversite by Mazda's engineers....

3) There are 2 of them installed

Will post the answer in a few days, unless somebody gets it correct first....enjoy!

I changed the name on the pics because the filename gave it away. :)

I won't mention what it is and let others guess...

But its stainless steel, so it wouldnt rust....another hint....hmmm....many more and it would give it away and make it too easy. But here is one, its NOT under the hood....and there are 2....a right and left

Not door hinge reinforcements....although from what I have seen on several RX-7 doors the hinges were a bit under designed by Mazda, but thats not the error these parts fixed....

I don't recall if I have seen these before or not, but I have thought about making some myself. :)

When I tell ya what they are and the problem they solve you will want to make a set...

They fit to the inside of the outer door handles.

They prevent unlocking of the door, by using a screwdriver through the huge arse hole under the door handles.

That was my first thought. Something blocking access in the doors, to prevent your ride from being hijacked.

Bingo!!!! We have a winner...they sit inside the door behind the door handle and block the two holes under the door handle. The design flaw is that if you pull up on the door handle you can put a screwdriver or icepick thru the rear hold and easily move throed to open the door. Its simple to break into a first Gen...scary simple

Gee I wish I'd known about that the time I locked myself out of my white GSL. (that only happened once)

KansasCityREPU 01-14-12 08:50 AM

I have a set of these new in the bag with the instruction sheet. I can scan and post it if anyone wants.

Screwdriver and 2 seconds and you can be in...no damage...its scary to think how easy and quick somebody can get in one of these cars....try it sometime on yours just in case...luckily nowadays crooks don't know the trick so ya shouldn't have to worry about that. Back when these cars were new the big thing was stealing car stereos...

Does the bag say who made them? I can't remember...thinking for some reason I bought them thru the now defunct RX-7 Club of America

83Limited 01-14-12 08:57 AM

Also if anyone wants I can make templates off mine if anybody would like to make themselves a set.

Not to jack your thread, but what about this obscure SA part? They came stock from the factory and hide in plain sight. I don't consider my car complete without one. It is rubber but not a tube and it does not attach under the hood???

Well, they didn't until you posted it for the world to read...

Even with those on the car, I can open a first gen with a coat hanger in about 30 seconds, under most conditions in the summer. That's all the hint I'm giving, too.

That looks just like the throttle return spring cover... but you said it's not tubular and doesn't go under the hood....

How big is it?

rwatson5651 01-14-12 10:42 AM

Easy, That is the anti vibration unit attached to the rear view mirror.

Damn, I thought I'd take longer. Your exactly right! I did figure it would be an old schooler who would know. :icon_tup:
