5-speed transmission weight?
Anyone know the dry weight of a 1st-gen 5-speed transmission only (no clutch, etc)?
Trying to guesstimate shipping costs. I think it's about 60 lbs based on having toted one around the garage not too long ago, but I would prefer a more exact number if anyone has one. :icon_tup::icon_tup: |
According to my bathroom scale 67.5 lbs.

67lbs seems light to me. I thought they were closer to 85lbs dry, but this is judging from my uncalibrated arms and comparing to other objects of known weight I have lifted before. I have an 82 5 speed sitting at home that I can weight when I get back on Monday if you like, just as a second opinion so to speak lol

Are you planning on rebuilding a trans while keeping the one in the SA Divin? After all that work I'd sure hope so!

I think he just needs one with the overdrive switch in the tail housing.

I can run it while refreshing/modifying my existing one, then I will have a good spare. & if I bone he rebuild, I still have a good trans. I dislike putting all my eggs on Dr. Frankenstein's workbench. |
I have an SA 5 speed that I will be swapping in to the glc soon...I was thinking about rebuilding it....gonna miss my 4spd though, but not the 5k rpm's on the highway...lol. I can weigh it if you still need a number.

If it's not too much trouble, it wouldn't hurt to have a check number to see how accurate rwatson's bathroom scale is!

soon as I get home today I will do it.

Hey Divin, I was going to do the same thing. I got a transmission from a local guy and swapped it out, now the old one (gslse 5-speed) is sitting in my garage waiting for me to do something.
It would be great if you could document the rebuild and post some pictures about it. I would find it very helpful I'm sure, and it might even get me to get off my arse and start the process. :-) |
