4 Tickets in 10 minutes

So I got an email today from NCrotaries.com about a meet in Raleigh. Nothing to do today, so might as well. 3 hour drive, so I fill up on gas and wash my car. She's so pretty when she's clean :D. Well, on my way on I-85N, cross the county line, and get yanked by a state trooper. He pulls me over and asks what year my car is, and I tell him its an 82. He gets me out the car and into his. When I get in he tells me he had an 83, and if it's anything like his, it has no AC. Truth.

Well anyways, he shows me my speed, 86mph in a 70. Also gave me a ticket for my expired inspection sticker (october 07, I never drive the car but to meets and maybe a mile down the street), and "Improper use of signal". Wtf, but whatever. He let's me go.

Start driving again. 70mph turns to 65mph, and I am doing 80. Cars in front of me doing the same, cars behind me following suit. This is a 3 lane road with me in the middle lane. Cars to my right doing 78ish (slowly passing them) cars to my left in the passing lane doing about 83-85. I look behind in the left lane and there's another state trooper 4 cars behind the car to the left of me. Everyone is still passing me on my left, and the cop gets behind me.

Lights go on.

This is where I begin to hate law enforcement. He comes to my passenger window after pulling me over and asks if I knwo how fast I was going. "80" I say, and he says "yes, in a 65". Then I ask him how he caught up to me. I made sure I did not say it in a cocky/assholeish tone, I just want to know how he caught up to me, when he was in the left lane (cars and officer going faster than me) with no lights on (so no one was getting out of the way for him, just cruising) and I was in the right. I told him he must have been following the cars doing 85 to catch up to me before the lights came on. His response," Well I pulled you over".

Ticket for 80 in a 65.

4 tickets. 10 minutes.

Does this seem like the 2nd officer singled me out? I have a real big feeling towards that. I mean, when you behind cars going faster than 80mph, who would you pull over? Of course, the guy with the exhaust.

So *&^$ it I say to myself. Pull in to a gas station, get some gatoraid. Car idles weird now. its idling at 1000, when it is usually at 1200. Sounds like a small block chevy. Great, now the car is acting up. Day isn't going too good now.

So I turn back and go home. Starts raining on my freshly washed car. Nothing big, but when you have a day like this, stuff adds up.

Good news? When I filled up, it was a little above 1/8th a tank, 10gal in. got back home, 279 miles, quarter tank mark. I figure I used about... 8.5 gallons.

What is my MPG?

32.8

Possible?

Picures for your pleasure.

yeah that second guy sounds like he singled u out which is fubar but theres not much u could do about it. here in tn on 1-75 where i live i fly buy them doing 80 all the time and they never even bother with me and my car is loud. i guess some of them are just pricks

WTF?! The officer bonds with you in the car by acknowledging he had an Rx-7 and doesn't have the good will to provide you with a warning or at least a break on the other tickets? I would have blown a fuse.

That picture of the police wagon reflecting in the passenger side mirror is a classic and is going in my Rx-7 favorite pictures collection. Thanks for posting.

May luck, if not The Force, be with you next time.

ALL HIGHWAY COPS ARE WORTHLESS! thats all i have to say!

He said they will throw out the inspection sticker ticket if I get it inspected, and the Improper signal as well. Apparently I didnt use my signal when pulling over.

FirebirdSlayer666 06-14-08 10:18 PM

I'm waiting for mazdaverx713b to chime in since he's an officer but I'm pretty sure the second time you got pulled is bogus. If they cannot show your speed on radar then they have no evidence of you speeding. You can probably fight that one seeing as how other traffic was going FASTER than you right in front of him and he too was speeding without emergency signals on. Next time don't admit to your speed but ask them how fast you were going, and if they tell you ask for your speed on their radar. Of course I could be totally off base here but this is my understanding

Rogue_Wulff 06-14-08 10:36 PM

Lets see, you drove a car, without the required inspection, at speeds higher than the posted limit, and you got tickets. Go figure.

I agree with the first, which is why I am not contesting it. But the second, is uncalled for. I mean c'mon.

Man. I feel for you, but it's a holiday weekend and you know how the good 'ol NC State Troopers are. When I went to Patrick's house in Morganton today, I had a Trooper get behind me when as soon as I got on the interstate coming home. Here I am in the SA with my loud exhaust, and an engine sitting in the back! I just new that I would be pulled for something. But luckily I kept to the speed limit and he wound up going on by me. So sometimes it pays to just chill out!

You got a ticket for speeding. Then, by your own admission, you were speeding again, not 10 minutes later. So, you got another ticket.
Does not matter that you feel you were "singled out". A single officer cannot stop everyone, so they must choose who gets made an example out of. The fact that he probably heard your tag number being radioed in just a few minutes earlier, likely had a little to do choosing you.
Some people just never seem to learn. Just because "everyone else was speeding" doesn't mean you have the right to also break the law, even if you have a cool car.
I bet you always drive above the limit on the freeway. If so, and you have gotten away with it this long, you were overdue for a ticket, and now you have a stack of them.

If I was to get stopped for speeding, and recieved a ticket (not cheap around here), I doubt I'd be speeding again anytime soon, let alone ~10 minutes later............ Much less coming in here and making it public. There's always gonna be an asshat that will bust your chops. Today, I get to be that asshat.

tallbozo 06-14-08 11:52 PM

it is a sports car...it attracts attention and speeding will get you a ticket. Pretty straight forward

Like I said, I admit I was speeding. But given the choice (if I were the cop) of a guy doing 80 vs the guy doing an 85, why go for the 80?

I was doing the speed limit earlier. But where you live and where I live are different. I got honked at and flashed because I was not "going with the crowd". I have friends who are officers and they say the safest way to go is with the traffic around you, give or take. This is straight [B]from an officer mouth who shares an opinion with officers of this jurisdiction[/B/].

If you are kind enough, I was asking how if I were doing the same speed as the traffic around me, while the traffic to the left of me was doing faster (whereas if you read the first post) then you would see how he would pick me out of the crowd.

If he were to follow your frame of mind then I would be in jail right now. Thanks to people unlike you, I am still driving.

This thread is about what happened today. Like I said, I admit to speeding to the first ticket, but if you are to single me out along all the others who are doing the same IF NOT MORE then you should burn at the stake.

If you do not have anything to contribute to this second ticket (which this thread is 90% about) then I will kindly ask you not to post here anymore.

EDIT: And YES it does matter if I was singled out or not. If I was, then that is profiling, which gets thrown out in court.

whereiscarmensandiego 06-15-08 03:05 AM

i dont think the cop has to get a radar read if he is following u at a set speed then he can also go off that i beleive....but it also depends on how long we was following u theres a set time or miles that they can follow before pulling u over if they break that limit then it becomes harrasment or somthing similar and u can have it thrown out.

the only thing thats gonna hurt u if u choose to take it to court is that the judge is gonna see all them tickets within 10 minutes of each other

Siraniko 06-15-08 03:05 AM

oh come on jeezus. you should know it by now that we wont believe you unless we see pix of all tickets.

Rogue_Wulff 06-15-08 05:51 AM

Where I live is not that different. I don't exactly show where I live, since none of you have ever heard of the town I live in. It's a one RX7 town. There's a few RX8's here, though none of the owners really know what a rotary is.
I drive 30 miles into Tulsa 2-3 times a week, on a hiway with a 75 MPH speed limit, and I am always getting passed by others. Frequently, I see them sitting on the side of road a short distance later, having a chat with a trooper. There's usually a couple of them working the area, and they seldom have any trouble finding customers.
The real difference here, is that I am older, and smart enough to know where they hang out.

84stock 06-15-08 11:17 PM

I hang out saturday nights with a bunch of the gang in what police recognize as a street racing group. I'm older and visit with the older group and the cops leave us alone. In the meantime the kids in the parking lot get nailed for anything from undercarriage lights to tinted windows while onlookers chant about harassment. Anyhow, I blipped my cutout switch (stupid) and ripped a "little", very very little, and i got pulled over a quarter mile down the road (cop went way out of his way to track me down). I explained in a professional manner that I have anew engine and the egr portion of the intake gasket blew out and that's why it was so loud and why I am taking it home. I have tinted windows on the side (Illegal), loud exhaust even with the cutout closed (bridgeport) a blower scoop sticking out of the hood and could not find my insurance or registration. "He let me go!" If you show respect and courtesy you'll get it in return.

t_g_farrell 06-16-08 10:19 AM

Stu, make sure you go to court on all the tickets. The goal at court is to get the points dropped or reduced, they'll still want your money. Just go up to the judge and explain it to him. BTW telling the guy you were doing 80 pretty much sinks your chances of claiming that you weren't speeding. Another technique you can apply is to keep rescheduling the court dates so that maybe the cop can't make it there to be a witness against you. In some states that gets the ticket immediately thrown out. Not sure how that works in NC.

Next time only go 10-12 mph over. They never pull you for that. Of course having an expired inspection and load exhasut doesn't help your chances. I bet the second guy pulled you because you didn't slow down after getting the first ticket. I'm sure he heard the call and was watching to see what you would do. Live and learn I guess. That stretch of 85 is always crawling with cops whenever we have gone over to Raleigh.

How many points does this give you? What happens in NC when the points get too high?

bad 83 06-16-08 02:08 PM

I think they suspend your liscence at 12 points.

Hmmm, I suspect you would know from experience maybe ;)

axle 06-16-08 07:43 PM

your driving a sports car that right there gets their attention the second cop was watching for you and figured you didn't learn yeah it's bull but what are you gonna do about it the judge is going to say he has to believe in the integrity of his officers

ray green 06-16-08 08:05 PM

Tim, I did get stopped out on I85 in Gwinnett a few weeks ago on my way in to work just before dawn and I was doing all those things that Stu was doing, including getting up to speed too soon.

The very nice gentleman read the riot act to me: Speeding, no indicator when changing lanes (in front of him), reckless driving, loss of license, etc. He goes back to his car, I start thinking about the fines.

He comes back, returns my license, I look up for the first time and see he's a young guy, maybe 25 or so. He lectures me again about speeding, reckless driving, how I could get killed in that little car and getting caught in his neck of the woods again.

Then he let me off with a warning.

Must be the hair. Still I like that guy.

Stu, if anybody ever tells you life is fair, you know he's either lying or stupid.

Let's see the photos!
