Both are nice in their own right, so it's gonna be down to which one is in better shape. If you get a 7 in a sad shape, it too can get expensive.
If you're getting it for a DD, research reliability in addition to the fun factor. Since both cars are super old, it's gonna be hit and miss. And yeah, consider an E30 Bimmer as well. |

Now I'm just waiting for 2024 so I can import an r34 GTR. |
I don't mean to be a dick... I own two RX-7's and love them both..... BUT..... I would rather take this Japan spec, steel bumper, front fender mirror, fairlady Z roaster than ANY 1st gen on the planet!!!
Nuff said!http://i378.photobucket.com/albums/o...09-30-26PM.jpg |
That is a mighty sweet JDM Roadster. Best I've seen.

^Good luck finding a g-nose z under $2,300 that's not covered in rust

I would prefer a 996 turbo or a Ferrari GTO! Come on people. The question was not "If you have a mountain of cocaine in your living room, what would you buy after you get tired of hookers and private jets (and hookers in private jets).
It seems the OP has about $2k to spend, which is why I recommended a E30 chassis BMW as you can pick up clean examples for unker $2k and still get 30mpg. First gens are an option, and as a stretch the 240Z is an option. Although, as some have pointed out, it will be hard to find a clean example at that price. To the OP: Make sure you also get an insurance quote on any car you are about to buy before you buy it. That way you can take that into consideration when considering the true cost of ownership. |

I've been reading all your post for the past week, and i think it was really helpful, but I have to say I went with the z. The one i found was in pretty good condition, the thing is I live in the middle of Texas where the only time i really have to worry about rust is when they lay down sand and salt on the roads those few days it snows in the year.
Attachment 386492 the engines been swapped with the 280, it still runs pretty well. I plan on working on the body and interior until the engine is blown, then I'll be contemplating what to replace it with. |
Wow, I guess I'm the only one that thinks a first gen looks better than the Z....hahah I really love the look of the first gen. I've seen a few Z's that I like but for the most part, a nicely done first gen wins every time for me.
Now a Datsun 510, I'd take that over the Z in a heartbeat. I'm thinking about adding one to my collection somewhere down the line. |
Nice and congrats!

Judging by that single picture, I'd say you made the right choice. That looks like a very nice Z you've got yourself there. :)
|
That's a very clean z. congrats
|
Yes, it looks great! Now you can search for a nice rex to keep it company. Lets see what shall I drive today.....its all good.
|
yeah I'm thinking I actually might get a 7 as soon as I finish rebuilding the z, I drove it today it runs great, just the clutch is kind of sticky when I shift but its fast

I'd get the 240z if it's rust free, they have a shit load of leg room and are pretty sexy. But I would swap to fuel injection... possibly turbocharged inline six?

That Z is a pretty car, just not as nice as a well kept 7. Here's a few more from that afternoon:
